As a
Junior Environmental Technician, you will join our
Guelph, Ontario office as part of our Eastern Natural Sciences team on a
4 or 8 month Co-op or summer student term starting
May, 2023.

The successful applicant will work in an integrated team of aquatic and terrestrial ecologists, fluvial geomorphologists and field staff to deliver a variety of terrestrial and aquatic projects.

The successful applicant will use her/his technical abilities to support tree inventories, botanical and wildlife surveys, ecological land classification assessments with the potential to help with a variety of water-related field activities (e.g. fish inventory, stream channel surveys, water quality and benthic sampling). This individual works well under pressure, is flexible and positive, and highly meticulous with a willingness to learn.


Responsibilities are as follows:

  • Assist with field work and carry out standard field methods (tree inventories, Ecological Land Classification, botanical inventories, wildlife surveys [birds, amphibians, bats], fish habitat mapping, water quality and benthic sampling, fish capture and relocations)
  • Conduct topographic and bathymetric surveys using total station and GPS technologies
  • Contribute to prefield planning for projects (i.e., safety planning, mapping preparation, equipment calibration) following Matrix standards
  • Support fieldwork and data processing across multiple disciplines, including engineering and geomorphology
  • Perform standard statistical analyses on collected field data
  • Prepare technical memorandums and reports summarizing field activities
  • Support the preparation of proposals, work plans and project budgets
  • Function effectively as part of a collaborative team

What We Are Looking For

  • Must be enrolled in a Technical Diploma in Environmental Science/ Technology or degree in Biology, Natural Sciences, or Environmental Science at a postsecondary institution
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with willingness to learn
  • Experience within a consulting environment would be an asset
  • Familiarity with flora and fauna, natural heritage systems, and watercourses of southwestern Ontario would be an asset
  • Working in and around watercourses and operating watercraft would be an asset
  • Analytical skills applicable to data analysis, study design and statistical analysis of environmental data
  • Proficient in MS Office software, particularly with Excel spreadsheets
  • Experience or training with surveying methods and equipment (Total Station, survey GPS) would be an asset
  • Selfmotivated and possess strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Availability to work fulltime in an office environment, when not working in the field
  • Ability to swim is a requirement
  • Valid driver's license is required
