Position Summary:


Responsibilities:


  • Research, develop, communicate, implement, evaluate and improve health and safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Coordinate or conduct training for all individuals (employees, contractors, visitors, etc.), recording and tracking training to ensure compliance, and manage contractor programs (contractors have proper documentations such as WSIB clearance certifiace, proof of insurance, etc.)
  • Participate in the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), performing workplace audits, investigations, inspections in order to identify hazards, advise on preventative/corrective measures, and encourage participation of other employees
  • Complete investigations of accidents, incidents, and/or near misses, completing the proper documentation, determining the root cause and corrective action
  • Represent the Company in matters of health and safety with the government, health and safety, Ministry of Labour, clients
  • Handle client/tenant security concerns to ensure concerns are dealt with in a timely, effective and diplomatic manner.
  • Manage permits for Confined Space and Hot Work
  • Manage safety equipment, tracking signouts, performing inspections and ensuring proper certification, and researching/suggesting new equipment
  • Manage WSIB claims, facilitating return to work process and ensuring claims are properly documented and forms submitted, from start to closure of cases
  • Manage yard, office, and vessel security, developing policies and procedures, and acting as a point of contact for security issues with Hamilton Port Authority, Transport Canada, clients, and contractors
  • Participate in security drills facilitiated by Transport Canada and HOPA
  • Investigate security issues and submit reports to the appropriate parties
  • Develop and implement environmental policies and procedures
  • Manage hazardous waste program, recycling program, the spill response team, and the Green Marine Certification

Qualifications & Experience:


  • Postsecondary school diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field of study
  • Occupational Health and Safety Certificate, as per the Occupational Health & Safety Act/Regulations
  • Minimum 5 years' experience with occupation health and safety management
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety management, applicable federal, provincial and municipal regulations/legislation, Workplace Safety & Insurance Act, the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations and applicable Human Rights
  • Experience working in a construction environment that includes confined spaces, hot work, working at heights, machinery and moving equipment
  • Ability to be assertive and firm when enforcing HSSE initiatives; help support and grow a culture that prioritizes Health and Safety
  • Knowledge of WSIB/STD/LTD processes and procedures, including WSIB claims management and related legislation
  • Proven ability to maintain the confidentiality of information and records
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
