Job Summary

"Drive for Change:

A mixed methods project to address systemic racism in health care among African-Canadian people living with HIV in BC" is a community-based study funded by the Vancouver Foundation.

The overarching project objectives are to:

investigate the gendered experiences of racism, discrimination and HIV stigma in the health care system of African-Canadian people living with HIV; identify and evaluate the core components of a peer navigation program to address the effects of gendered racism and discrimination in the health care system.

The project is committed to 'GIPA/MEPA' principles of greater and meaningful involvement and engagement of people living with HIV.

The Interviewer/Outreach Worker operates as a member of a multidisciplinary, collaborative research team.

The Interviewer recruits and pre-screens potential participants, leads/facilitates/co-facilitates focus group interviews as needed; and assists in development of surveys, data collection, data cleansing, and data entry resulting from interviews.

The Interviewer/Outreach Worker also performs outreach activities and connects people with community services as needed.

Organizational Status

This UBC position/project working jointly under a UBC faculty co-Principal Investigator and community co-Principal Investigator would be based at the Centre for Gender & Sexual Equity (CGSHE), a UBC and SFU-affiliated academic research centre.

The CGSHE has a strategic mandate of leadership in promoting gender equity and sexual health equity through in BC, Canada and globally.

The CGSHE is a network of over 30+ UBC and SFU faculty, their UBC/SFU research teams, and affiliated trainees with shared mission and goals.

We work in a highly collaborative team and strive to hire members from diverse backgrounds and lived experience.

This interdisciplinary faculty and its educational programmes strive to improve the health of individuals and populations, partnering with local, national and global communities to further our goals:
social justice and health equity for all.

Work Performed

Recruits potential participants, provides information and answers questions about research studies.

Conducts qualitative and quantitative structured interviews with eligible participants and performs outreach for follow up interviews.

Conducts outreach and interviews off site at community services and/or other facilities with varying environments (e.g., health care facilities, public spaces) using approved transportation options.

Reviews questionnaires for completeness and accuracy.

Ensures policies and procedures for data management are followed and all documents are entered and filed as required by ethical guidelines.

Responsible for processing participant honoraria, including paying participant and recording honoraria for daily float reconciliation.

Participates in knowledge translation presentations to community organizations as needed.

Assists with training staff on data collection protocols as needed.

Refers participants to appropriate services and/or provides initial support when required. Performs other related duties as required.

The incumbent will work out of the CGSHE/ UBC Gender Research Hub, a community/ clinical research space in the Downtown Eastside and/or in community office spaces in Surrey.

Travel to communities for meetings will be required from time to time.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position entails a high level of confidentiality and discretion. Errors could result in significant concerns regarding the liability, credibility, and integrity of the Centre.

Work may involve simple techniques and methods requiring knowledge and/or procedures that are readily acquired, requiring little judgment; the nature of work is routine and clearly defined; all problems are referred to supervisor.

Supervision Received
Reports to the co-Principal Investigators. Works under direct supervision of the Project Coordinator in accordance with detailed oral or written instructions; routine
