The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a permanent part-time Chatham Building Attendant in the Housing Services division. This permanent part-time position is for 9.0 to 9.75 hours per month.

Building Attendants will receive free rent accommodation which will include free heat, hydro, water and a telephone stipend.


Where a Building Attendant is required to perform any work other than those duties listed below, Chatham-Kent Housing Services will approve paying the Building Attendant for such work at the annually approved hourly rate of pay.

Job description

This position acts as the municipal public housing "eyes and ears" of the building. Building Attendants are required to live on-site in a unit designated by the Municipality.

The main purpose of the position is to act as a conduit to the Municipality for any tenant issues, daily walk-through of the building (and around outside of building occasionally, as weather permits) to identify any concerns and reporting all matters to the Tenant Relations Manager.

This position also assists the Building Maintenance Supervisor in terms of reporting maintenance issues and monitoring the fire alarm systems.

In the event of a fire alarm, the Building Attendant will assist in evacuating the building and following fire alarm municipal procedures.

Essential responsibilities

In the area of tenant relations:
Reporting disturbances to the Manager, Tenant Relations and/or police

filing incident reports with the Manager, Tenant Relations or designate where appropriate

Reporting tenant complaints to the Case Manager

Daily building walk-through, confirming that doors required to be locked are locked

Showing vacant units (for applicants with appointments scheduled by Tenant Relations Manager and/or her/his designate)

Logging rent payments received (cheques or money orders)

Assisting on lock outs (i.e., letting tenants with misplaced keys into their units)

Change elevator to service mode for scheduled move-ins/move-outs
Other duties as assigned/authorized by the Manager, Tenant Relations, Manager, Housing Assets or Director of Housing Services


In the area of building maintenance:
Reporting maintenance problems to the Manager, Housing Assets

Reporting on vandalism to the Manager, Housing Assets

Assisting with monthly fire alarm testing

Monitoring fire alarm systems (Fire Code checks) in apartment buildings only

Visually check fire alarm panel re AC power lamp lit

If AC lamp not lit, press "lamp test" to verify power connection

If no power connections, check fire alarm AC breaker or call Manager, Housing Assets

Visually check fire alarm panel for trouble signals; if any lamp/s besides the AC power on-lamp are lit, note lamp description and advise Manager, Housing Assets immediately


Check Exit Lights in apartment buildings only -ensure are illuminated and not damaged; report any issues to the Manager, Housing Assets.

Essential qualifications

Able to understand basic oral and written instructions

Able to provide brief oral and/or written incident reports when required

Good communication skills; personable and positive attitude

Able to demonstrate ability to maintain confidentiality; required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement with the Municipality

Must meet tenancy requirements for building location

Willingness to attend all corporate training as required

Physical capacity to attend to all job responsibilities

Building Attendants should be available on site most of the time during the week

As a general guideline, Building Attendants should be on site at least every second weekend

Building Attendants who are away on weekends must ensure that the visual Fire Code checks are completed in their absence

This position works mostly indoors

This position works weekday and weekend hours with occasional evening hours
