About this position:


Vancouver Pet Food Bank:


  • Creates a welcoming and a safe environment for clients and volunteers alike.
  • Engages clients, answering questions and providing resources as needed.
  • Records and supervises volunteers recording information such as:
  • Statistics on visitors and distributed
  • food, litter, nail trims, etc.
  • Spay/neuter referrals
  • Supplies / needs for weekly pet food bank
  • Liaises with Jacob's Well on site, ensuring volunteers and clients follow and respect JW policies and protocols as well as ensuring site is left clean following weekly food bank.
  • Supports and coordinates food bank volunteers and UBC practicum students, including scheduling, training & supervision; provides supplies and equipment as necessary.
  • Acts as liaison between Outreach Specialist
  • Low Income & Food Bank Services, and BC SPCA Vancouver Animal Centre and BC SPCA Vancouver Animal Hospital.
  • Perform nail trims and dematting shaves on cats, dogs, and small animals as required.
  • Pack, load and transport animal supplies and food to and from food bank location and community partners.
  • Coordinate vehicle repairs in the event of vehicle damage.
  • Drive BC SPCA vehicle to the downtown eastside area of Vancouver on food bank program days.
  • Make recommendations to improve efficiency and reach of the pet food bank program.

Administration:


  • Ensures records and weekly Vancouver Food Bank numbers are recorded and maintained.
  • Troubleshoots any issues with recording as required.
  • Ensures Food Bank volunteers are updating online volunteer management system with hours and current information.
  • Ensures database of current volunteers is uptodate.
  • Participate in Outreach Team meetings.

Knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed in this role:

  • Training in animal care plus 3 years' experience in working with people and animals; or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer
  • Working knowledge of health and safety requirements; ability to identify risks and use quick judgement to resolve any health and safetyrelated issues
  • Ability to work independently and implement policy and procedures
  • Ability to identify and deescalate potential conflict
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • A positive attitude and an empathetic approach to customer service for a diverse audience


  • Computer Skills

  • Windows, MS Office Excel
  • Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers' License in good standing is required
  • Physical ability to lift/push/pull heavy objects up to 50lbs
  • Ability to work Wednesdays and Thursdays on a weekly basis
  • Training and experience in animal behaviour and/or social work are considered to be assets
  • Philosophical harmony with BC SPCA policies, programs and strategic directions
