Job Purpose


Under the direction of the Language Training Director, the Language Training Unit Team Lead accomplishes the Language Training Programs' operational objectives by providing lead hand supervision to language class instruction activities, program administration, and the student intake and placement process.

The Team Lead coordinates the purchase and development of materials and resources to assist in providing high quality language instruction.

Other duties include counseling and guiding students to ensure their success in acquiring English skills, assisting special needs students, and performing other supervisory tasks.


Duties and Responsibilities

Language Training Program Delivery Standards

  • Checks student files to ensure that documentation on learner growth is effectively charted. Maintains appropriate documentation and records; ensures that staff maintain appropriate client records. Submits reports as required.
  • Ensures service quality by maintaining awareness of program standards and outputs and checking lesson quality, program reporting, and record keeping.
  • Helps to develop internal standards and procedures for the work of the unit.
  • Facilitates collaborative work relationships by acting as a resource person in an identified area of expertise.

Staff Intake, Training, and Support

  • Develops and maintains a database for teacher and student library resources; works together with teachers to identify specific resource needs, creates and acts on plans for materials development and procurement.
  • Assists in counselling, and guides staff by coaching, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates the work of teachers and staff on specific resource development projects; identifies needs and creates work plans for resource development.
  • Assists in recruitment, selection, orientation, and training of staff; develops professional and personal growth opportunities.
  • Assists the director in staff performance assessments, provides feedback to the director on performance and professional development opportunities, and helps to identify team and individual training needs.

Unit Operations

  • Participates in scheduling activities with the director; reviews administrative staff work plan and guides their work in collaboration with the director;
  • Supervises the administrative support staff to ensure high quality of service is provided to new clients. May participate in first contact with new clients and / or group or individual orientation sessions.
  • Trains administrative staff in responding to inquiries for information about English language classes.
  • Oversees the waitlist procedure and coordinates the work of administrative assistants to ensure the waitlist is accurate and updated.
  • Oversees regular ongoing reporting to program funders (iCARE, other).

Student Client Experience and Trends in Language Training

  • Provides intervention and guidance to staff with clients in situations that need immediate decisions, particularly those requiring a high degree of assessment and procedural modification. Monitors progress, consults with staff and clients, and makes referrals to a range of internal and external service options.
  • Works together with teachers to identify students with special needs who may benefit from additional counselling to help assist their course of study. Manages cases by working with special needs students and students in high risk/crisis situations.
  • Acts to resolve client concerns. Documents and reports issues and complaints, communicating with the director to respond to emergent issues.
  • Performs study progress counselling sessions with students when required to address barriers to study, or special English language learning needs; documents these sessions in client files / databases.
  • Keeps director apprised of special problems or emergent issues.

Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Graduate from a postsecondary program in the social sciences, humanities or education.
  • Either:
a) Significant experience teaching English as a Second Language to newcomers to Canada (preferably in a LINC Program) combined with one year or more of experience supervising language programming, OR

b) a demonstrated knowledge of newcomers to Canada, and three years' experience or more in supervising staff, preferably in a work environment serving newcomers to Canada.

  • Other combinations of relevant experience and qualifications may be considered, but must meet or exceed the qualifications above by equivalency as assessed by program director.
