Our role

Your role


As the Health Safety and Training Coordinator, you'll support our vision and values by developing the Safety Management System for the Fish & Wildlife Branch and overseeing its implementation and maintenance in the Department of Environment.

The incumbent fosters a safety-focused culture, leads risk mitigation, and ensures compliance to the Yukon Workers' Safety and Compensation Act, the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations, and best practices towards ensuring a safe work environment.

  • Experience designing, implementing and maintaining health and safety management systems/databases in adherence with legislation and regulations.
  • Experience conducting investigations into injuries, accidents, and near misses and the development of corrective actions to prevent future incidences.
  • Experience facilitating training for a large audience and evaluating the effectiveness.
  • Experience developing and implementing safe work policies, directives, and programs.
  • Experience ensuring employee compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Experience executing workplace safety inspections.

Knowledge, Skills and Suitability

  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety legal frameworks, and emergency planning
  • Ability to maintain training records in adherence with regulations and standards.
  • Analytical, writing and communication skills; ability to build ownership and commitment to compliance with safe work practices throughout the department
  • Change management skills and collaboration skills
  • Ability to lead safety planning and emergency planning
  • Ability to work effectively in cooperation with other agencies
  • Skills in facilitating and developing group planning sessions and delivering targeted presentations for training and client awareness purposes
  • Commitment to act in accordance with organizational decisions, with integrity and high ethical standards
  • Understanding of the northern context and its unique challenges with respect to the health and safety of employees
  • Ability to plan, promote, and establish a safetyoriented departmental culture and to foster departmental implementation of emergency, business continuity and enterprise risk management plans.
  • Ability to create and maintain communication/marketing initiatives to support safety and emergency planning projects.
