Reporting to the Manager, Learning Services, the Coordinator delivers writing specific academic supports.

The Coordinator provides programming to ensure students are offered multiple opportunities to bridge gaps in skills and foundational writing and communication literacies to the Sheridan community in support of student learning and development.

This role provides the College with a coordinated, consistent, and comprehensive approach to foundational writing and communication skills.

The Coordinator is central to the tutoring centres in providing foundational literacy support services to the college community including workshops, ESL sessions, and tutor programming.

The Coordinator facilitates the activities of English/Writing Skills tutors in consultation with the Learning Services Team.

The Coordinator supports recruitment and administration of English/Writing Skills tutors, including onboarding, training, scheduling and supporting tutors in their role of assisting with student learning.

The incumbent develops and delivers literacy and ESL resources and leads the delivery of writing and conversation practice sessions and workshops.

They also engage directly with students through 1:1 tutoring appointments.

The Coordinator conducts outreach and regular communication with faculty members to ensure that Writing skills supports are meeting the needs of faculty and students.

The Coordinator is also responsible for data collection along with preparing and providing analysis reports on trends and outcomes of their interventions to the Manager and Learning Services team members.

What You'll be Doing

Facilitates the activities of English/Writing Skills tutors in consultation with the Learning Services team

Engages in data-analysis and regularly reporting on trends and outcomes of course and program-level tutoring

Instructing, training and coaching tutors on English/Writing skills development tools and strategies used to support student learning;
Maintaining relationship with Sheridan's TESL program to promote opportunities in the tutoring centres to recent graduates and placement students;
Developing and delivering foundational literacy content;
Developing foundational literacy resources for sharing in multiple formats;
Coordinating and/or leading writing and conversation practice sessions for ESL learners;
Conducting 1:1 and group appointments with students to develop students' English/Writing skills such as starting and developing writing assignments, documenting, structuring and formatting writing assignments, demonstrating how to review marked assignments and use them as learning tools, developing grammar, punctuation and spelling skills, guiding in the use of citation styles, building student confidence when facing deadlines and due dates, and supporting second language learning;
Working with faculty to implement these new methods in the classroom (e.g. scaffolding writing assignments);
Maintaining awareness and integrating understanding of assistive technologies;
Performing other related duties as assigned.

About You

You have the ability to assess and advise clients on policy and procedures.


You enjoy balancing many different tasks, can manage your time well and prioritize multiple projects while staying organized and maintaining a high level of attention to detail.

You have a highly collaborative spirit and excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to facilitate conversations effectively.

You have the ability to prepare and present educational topics to groups of faculty, staff or students.

You have excellent writing skills.

A post-graduate degree in English, Writing, Rhetoric, Education, Communications, Liberal Arts, ESL, Adult Education or a related field; Master's degree preferred (preference will be given to applicants who have one or more university degrees in English or Rhetoric Education)

3 years of teaching experience, including experience supporting student academic services (such as tutoring), ideally in a post-secondary environment (equivalency will be considered)

Experience assessing and advising clients on policy and procedures

Experience preparing and presenting educational topics to groups of faculty, staff or students

Experience collecting, recording, analyzing, reporting and presenting data

Experience supporting foundational writing skills in an educational institution (preferred)
