Job Purpose


Under the direction of the Employment Services Director, the Employment Counsellor assists immigrants in setting and meeting their employment goals through developing and delivering in-house employment programs and services, providing individualized instruction in the labour market, education and training equivalency, job search techniques, and interview strategies.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Career Counselling_
  • Identifies clients' barriers to employment and advises clients on how to overcome their employment barriers.
  • Helps clients realize their immediate employment goals by providing individualized instruction in the labour market, job search techniques, and interview strategies.
  • Guides clients in their active job search by onetoone coaching, preparing or critiquing resumes and cover letters, making employer contacts, and followup activities.
  • Manages cases by identifying nonemployment barriers, referring clients to other service providers, documenting case files, and sharing client information through case consultations.
  • Programming_
  • Facilitates group/classroom workshops/programs to educate and guide clients in their job search.
  • Ensures service quality and collaborative work relationships by providing guidance to new staff and acting as a resource person in an identified area of expertise.
  • Administration_
  • Keeps director/team leaders informed by regular reporting as required and advising them on emergent issues.
  • Provides program information and data by maintaining client records, preparing required reports, participating in staff meetings, and entering all outstanding information into their respective databases.
  • Fostering Business-Relationship Management_
  • Support data collection, produce local forum reports, support, and participate in evaluation activities.
  • Identify and maintain local forums and partnerships.
  • Identify and nominate a local member to join the national advisory committee of employers and economic development/business associations, SPOs and other relevant partners that can provide guidance and championship.
  • Convene and organize 1 Feedback Channel Forum and 2 forum followup meetings/activities (FY1).
  • Convene and organize 6 Feedback Channel Forums and 4 forum followup meetings/activities per region (FY2).
  • Maintain engagement of 8 employers, 4 SPOs per executing partner and 4 nontraditional partners (can include universities, municipalities, and any other key actors with high influence) throughout project duration.
  • Identify, compile, and communicate success stories, best practices and support the development of new learning resources.
  • Provide feedback and input into data collection process, findings, and analysis.
  • Participate and provide support to the project assessment and evaluation activities.
  • Other duties as assigned._

Education and Experience

  • University degree in Commerce, Business Administration, or social sciences, humanities, public relations or adult education, and, one year of work experience providing employment counselling services, OR
  • Graduate of postsecondary program (2 years minimum) in adult education, jobcoaching, or career counselling, and two years' work experience providing employment counselling services.
  • Training in career counselling is not mandatory but is considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of the labour market and keeps informed of community events.

Required Licenses and/or Certifications

  • Criminal Occurrence Security Check
  • Must complete a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check in good standing and within three months prior to first day of employment.
