Communications Coordinator

(parental leave position 12 to 18 months or until return of incumbent)
School District 47 (Powell River, B.C)

School District No. 47 serves the educational needs of approximately 3000 students
through elementary and secondary (Gr schools and other educational programs
and employs approximately 400 staff. Located on the Sunshine Coast, within the qathet
Regional District, and surrounded by the natural beauty and amazing outdoor recreation
opportunities, SD47 works to promote an exciting and fulfilling work environment.


The Opportunity
A key priority for School District 47 is to improve communication and engagement with

our key stakeholders:
staff, students, parents, and the community. Through effective
communications that demonstrate our impact as a district, we hope to build awareness
around our strategic goals and priorities; build trust; and showcase learner success.
This will come to life through earned media, paid media, brand + visual identity, digital +
social communications, internal communications, thought leadership and more.

This function is being built from the ground up and it is an exciting time to be a part of
the efforts underway to lay a framework for the long term. Come work with us to shine a

create and implement a variety of communications initiatives with the primary functions
being related to social media content development, monitoring, and planning; website
content; and brand-related work.


Specific Responsibilities
Reporting to and working in partnership with the Director of Communications, the

Communications Coordinator will:

  • Create and manage a monthly content calendar that includes all priority communication
channels.

  • Develop engaging daily/weekly content to profile our work and update key stakeholders.
  • Monitor and maintain our district social media channels.

  • Develop interesting story angles about SD47 initiatives as well as thought leadership
opportunities.

  • Develop and design brand resources, often in collaboration with other staff members, to
support initiatives/programs.

  • Ensure districtwide brand and accessibility standards are met for internal and external
visual, print, electronic and social media messaging platforms.

  • Monitor trends in our sector for engagement and communications opportunities with key
stakeholders.

  • Provide regular analytics on social media usership and trends on followers on all social
media platforms and remain current with social media best practices, strategies, and
industry trends.

  • Attend events to take photos or video to use on social media or other platforms.
  • Jointly write profiles, stories, outlines, newsletters and other resources to support
improved processes and governance for internal communications.

  • Work with all staff to determine what can be profiled in a way that ensures student safety
and that all permissions have been granted.

  • Promote equity and inclusiveness in the development and implementation of
communications to support our programs and services.

  • Other communicationsrelated duties as assigned.
**Required Qualifications: - University degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Business

Administration or related field.

  • A minimum of 3 years' work experience in communications, or a directly related field.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to draft clear and
compelling content.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and successfully implementing digital
communications strategies.

  • Experience tracking, monitoring and measuring social media outcomes, managing and
using social media platforms, analytics and reporting tools.

  • A demonstrated track record of strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Strong client service orientation and ability to work with deadlines.
  • Understanding of and experience implementing brand identity guidelines.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficient skills and expertise in computer technology and various digital platforms and
tools.

  • Ability to respectfully challenge the status quo and get buyin for new ways of working.
  • Comfort taking initiative to suggest and deliver new ideas.
  • Proficiency using Canva. (And/or experience in graphic design.)
  • An awareness of the requirement for confidentiality of sensitive information seen or
heard.
