As a Landscape Technician II in Community Forestry, you will play a critical role in developing and facilitating education and engagement opportunities for Edmontonians and stakeholders.

Providing education on the many benefits of trees and on the goals of the Urban Forestry department will promote the overall preservation and growth of the city's urban forest.

It is through the development of informed key messages, educational campaigns, and promotional materials that Urban Forestry can effectively inform internal and external stakeholders on current practices, policies, and seasonal updates.


Key responsibilities will be to:

  • Develop effective key messages to provide internal and external stakeholders in relation to the many benefits of Edmonton's urban forest and Urban Forestry current operations, policies, and practices
  • Develop physical and digital promotional materials to be used as reference guides for stakeholders, citizens, and community groups
  • Develop and deliver presentations and workshops to share key messages to stakeholder groups
  • Review and update Urban Forestry webpages, including the maintenance of dashboards and interactive maps
  • Create engaging content for social media and newsletter articles
  • Liaison and communicate with multiple stakeholders, both internally and externally
  • Assist with the development and implementation of new programming and education initiatives as it related to the urban forest
  • Assist with the planning and facilitation of public events including Arbor Day and National Forest Week
  • Assist with technical writing on projects related to improvement of and education on Edmonton's urban forest such as grant writing and research opportunities
  • Assist overseeing and promoting citizenfocused programs, such as the Commemorative Tree, Tree Donation, and Request to Plant programs
  • Assist with the facilitation and promotion of community tree planting projects, including tracking of tasks, budget, and contractor work
  • Use best management practices to encourage and implement new methodologies of caring for municipal trees
  • Work closely with other City internal groups to share goals and operations of the Urban Forestry department
  • Respond to 311 inquiries relating to the urban forest
  • Assist with projects related to Urban Forestry portfolios including Planting Forestry, Pruning Forest, Project Forestry, and Community Forestry, as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:


  • Completion of a 2 year diploma or equivalent in Landscape Design, Urban Forestry, Natural Sciences or a related field from a recognized institute of technology, or Red Seal Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in landscape construction
  • Experience overseeing and directing contractors and/or internal staff is an asset
  • Arborist Certificate through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is an asset
  • Knowledge of landscape and construction techniques, Urban Forestry practices and terminology and knowledge of tree selection for planting sites
  • Experience in urban forestry or tree planting, including a strong familiarity of local tree species, is an asset
  • Basic computer skills to complete the assigned work, including experience with Google Applications
  • Experience with GIS is an asset
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
  • Ability to interpret landscape plans and specifications related to the work assigned
  • Ability to work outofdoors for extended periods and in unfavourable weather conditions as required by the work assigned
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit may be a requirement of this position
  • Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • Conduct work in a manner that complies with the requirements set out in the City's Environmental Management System (EMS)
