About Us:


The
Agri-Food Assurance Section operates laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 that provide laboratory analyses in support of animal health outbreaks and disease response, surveillance programs, export requirements and market access.

Additional activities include outreach to provincially licensed meat and dairy facilities and conducting food and food safety policy analysis.


Role:

This position is responsible for overseeing three areas of focus within the Agri-Food Assurance Section (AFAS):

  • The maintenance and operation, as well as regulatory compliance of the Containment Level 3 laboratory.
  • The operation of the Media Preparation laboratory which ensures that the biological laboratories within AFAS are supplied with the required testing media and reagents.
  • Coordinates various Sectionwide services including biohazardous waste disposal, laboratory garment supply and laundering, preparation and supply of reference organisms for AFAS, sourcing and coordinating various safety training courses for staff, and maintaining a warehouse of common items for the Section.


These major responsibilities support AFAS, the Food Safety Branch and the department in ensuring robust assurance systems as outlined in the Agriculture and Irrigation Business Plan.


Major responsibilities include:


Provide technical supervision and leadership to technical staff to ensure quality products and services.

  • Trains new staff and/or coordinates training.
  • Supervises technical work within the laboratory to ensure quality results.

Responsible to ensure availability of high containment laboratories for routine testing and for use in response to reportable animal disease outbreaks.

  • Ensures high containment facilities are in place and operated in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Assists with ensuring appropriate respiratory protection program is maintained for all AFAS staff.

Supervise the staff and overall operation of the Media Preparation laboratory.

  • Resolves issues arising between the laboratories and the Media Preparation laboratory, as well as any nonconforming results and corrective actions.
  • Has strong knowledge of microbiology and understanding of various testing media and reagents.

Oversee section-wide services to help ensure effective operation of the section and regulatory compliance of the laboratories.

  • Oversees maintenance of regulatory licensing and certification of the biological laboratories within AFAS.
  • Coordinates Occupational Health and Safety inspections, and documents and tracks findings to inform management.
  • Works with Biological Safety Officer to maintain Biological Safety Program.
  • Works with Chemical Safety Officer to maintain Chemical Safety Program.

Maintain the ISO 17025 Quality Management System in the work unit to ensure all products and services are of high quality.

  • Has comprehensive knowledge of the ISO 17025 Quality Management System.
  • Writes, reviews, and revises Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to meet accreditation guidelines.

Understand and know how to properly obtain, operate and maintain laboratory equipment in order to generate quality results and ensure animal disease outbreak testing capacity.

  • Maintains indepth knowledge of operation of each piece of equipment.
  • Ensures that all equipment is maintained properly, and maintenance records are up to date.

Qualifications:


Ph.
D. in a scientific discipline
related to the position,
plus two (2) years progressively responsible related experience.

Equivalencies may be considered - directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • Masters degree plus four (4) years related experience; or
  • University graduation in a related field, plus six (6) years related experience

Additional Requirements:


  • Must have medical clearance to wear a half or full face respirator
  • Evening and weekend work may be required when the laboratories are responding to an animal disease event.

Assets:


  • Training or certification in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Previous experience working in biological containment levels 2 and/or 3 laboratories.
  • Previous experience working within an ISO 17025 quality system.
