Summer Public Affairs Officer - Ottawa, Canada - First Nations Financial Management Board

THIS IS A TEMPORARY FULL TIME ROLE - 8 WEEKS
**Position Overview
As part of FMB's Public Affairs team, the Summer Public Affairs Officer will support one or more areas in Events, Communications or Government Relations.
Accountabilities
Events
- Supports the coordination of events including conferences, seminars, dinners, and training sessions;
- Ensures that events progress seamlessly by following established procedures, collaborating with other employees, and ensuring accuracy;
- May be asked to source venues and obtain quotes,
- May be asked to assist liaising with caterers, exhibitors, delegates, and speakers;
- Maintains detailed and accurate event files such as exhibitor databases, contract, and financial information;
- Supports the coordination of materials and delivery of materials to events;
- Collaborates with other staff to help develop promotional materials for the event;
- Delivers excellent client service throughout the client or potential client experience.
- Provides administrative support to other members of event planning staff.
Communications
- Supports the gathering, research, and preparation of corporate communications materials;
- Maintains calendars and media lists;
- Assists in organizing and execution of campaigns; Participates in brainstorming and planning sessions;
- Assist in tracking media coverage or Public Relations metrics;
- Builds and maintains strong relations with FMB Business lines;
- Strong understanding of our audience; ability to utilize key demographics to target communications efforts;
- Keeps aware of external partners/business environment and industry news;
- Provides support maintaining FMB's social media channels, including content development monitoring, issues management, scheduling and analytics;
- Undertakes general administrative and clerical duties.
Government Relations
- Supports the Public Affairs team in FMB's engagement with governments and politicians;
- Assists in monitoring, analysing, and curating media for sector issues and matters relating to FMB and its relationship with government.
- Monitors news media and government sources for potential changes in regulatory and legislative areas to ensure that FMB reacts effectively to impacts on its operations;
- Assists in cultivating cultural awareness initiatives to strengthen relationships between First Nations organizations, government officials, and key stakeholders
- Works collaboratively with internal and external partners, to support a substantial calendar of government and governmentrelated events.
- May be asked to support organizing and coordinating meetings, presentations and special events;
- Prepares reports and presentations;
- Undertakes general administrative and clerical duties.
Qualifications
- Must be aged years to participate in the Canada Summer Jobs program;
- Must be a permanent resident of Canada, a Canadian Citizens or legally permitted and protected under the Immigration and Refugee protection during the period of employment;
- Understanding of public affairs in an area of Events, Communications or Government Relations;
- Willingness to follow industry trends and current methods;
- Experience working with Indigenous Governments, organizations and communities considered a strong asset;
- Strong communicator with a strong command of written and spoken English; French language skills considered an asset;
- Wellorganized, with the ability to work within deadlines; analytical mind with attention to detail;
- Effective working skills in Microsoft Suite.
Work Conditions
- This position is based in Ottawa, Ontario. Hybrid work may be considered.
