Description

The Equity and Inclusion Office (EIO), under the auspices of the Associate Vice-President, Equity and Inclusion, has a broad and proactive mandate to work with campus and community partners to promote, develop, coordinate and support initiatives which build individual and organizational capacity to advance equity, diversity and inclusion goals, and to foster a culture of openness, respect, fairness, and inclusion.

EIO reaches out to and engages diverse communities in awareness-raising, prevention education and training activities, promotes and supports community efforts to enhance accessibility and inclusion, supports community members who have experienced sexual violence and facilitates the resolution of community complaints of harassment and discrimination, including failure to reasonably accommodate, on the basis of any human rights protected grounds.


The Manager is responsible for managing McMaster's online Accessibility Hub, and for establishing and coordinating mechanisms for effective and efficient communication and collaboration across the network of central and decentralized offices and champions working to advance campus accessibility.

The Manager is the coordinating provincial liaison in the university in relation to reporting progress on adherence to Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) Standards.


The Manager is therefore a key consultant and contributor to the McMaster Accessibility Advisory Council (MAAC), comprising a team of senior officers and decision-makers of the University who are responsible AODA compliance.


Accountabilities:

To meet the primary objectives of the Job Description, the Manager of Accessibility Programs will:


Strategic Accessibility Planning

  • Under the direction of the Director Human Rights & Accessibility and the Associate Vice-President Equity and in partnership with relevant key consulted groups, facilitates the development and implementation of a Strategic Framework for Campus Accessibility and Strategic Action Plan that identify leadership commitments, policy development, awarenessraising and education and supports and resources;
  • Develops strategies to enhance AODA compliance within the Equity and Inclusion Office and, externally, as required;
  • Assesses gaps and identifies both challenges and solutions to achieving both institutional and unitlevel accessibility goals and priorities;
  • Remains up to date on leading practices in relation to advancing accessibility in the higher education sector.

AODA Compliance Coordinating

  • Works in close partnership with the Chair, McMaster Accessibility Advisory Council (MAAC), and provides consultation to the MAAC members, to support the University to meet its AODA legislative obligations;
  • Liaises with provincial representatives and external AODA / Accessibility Working Groups regarding AODA compliance requirements;
  • Under the direction of the MAAC Chair, prepares and presents annual reports to the MAAC and other key consulted groups on the University's status with respect to AODA compliance;
  • Coordinates the collection of institutional data to inform the preparation of biennial government AODA compliance reports;
  • Researches, drafts, and consults on the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines that support McMaster University in implementing and complying with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and that advance the creation of an accessible campus environment for persons with disabilities.

Education and Training

  • Fulfills the accessibilityrelated educational mandate of the AccessMac program by researching, designing, and delivering a wide range of workshops and specialized training for students, staff, and faculty designed to raise awareness and build skills to ensure AODA compliance and accessibility both virtually and inperson,
  • Designs and develops resources (e.g., Plain Language User Guides to accompany accessibility/disabilityrelated policies/programs) that are informed by a critical analysis of disability and its intersection with other social identities;
  • Coordinates special events that are relevant to the intersecting realities of a diverse campus community (e.g. December 3rd International Day of Persons with Disabilities; National Accessibility Week)

Consultation and Project Work

  • Networks with and provides support to individuals and groups striving to design inclusive and accessible projects and events;
  • Provides consultation and support to campus constituencies in the development of mechanisms or programs to resolve issues related to AODA compliance and accessibility;
  • Acts as consultative support to persons with disabilities experiencing harm; assesses liaises and refers members of the campus community to the Human Rights and Discrimination Program regarding issues related to discrimination and harassment based on protected grounds of disability.
