Manager, Clinical Services Emergency Department, Respiratory Therapy, Endoscopy, Collaborate Practice


Summary of Role


Reporting to the Vice President Chief Nursing Executive, the Manager, Clinical Services is a member of the management team and is directly responsible for the day-to-day operations and administration of the Emergency, Respiratory Therapy, Endoscopy units, and Collaborative Practice.

With a focus on facilitating superior patient experience, this position is responsible to lead the planning and departmental operations including human resources, quality and risk management, fiscal responsibilities, internal and external partnerships, project and change management and assures that all regulatory requirements are met.


The position plays a major role in providing information, analysis and advice to other management and senior leadership respecting the above departments and assists the senior leadership team in planning and decision making on an operational and strategic basis.

Other major duties include complaint resolution and management, performance management and actively leading and engaging on various committees both internally and externally.


Primary Accountabilities

  • Provides leadership and support for departmental staff.
  • Effectively plans Human Resources requirements, succession planning, developmental needs and selection to provide maximum team effectiveness and department service.
  • Participates in the recruitment process including resume screening, interviewing, hiring and orientation planning.
  • Identifies opportunities for review and improvement, and jointly with staff and other leaders develops processes/procedures for improvement.
  • In collaboration with the VP CNE, develops, implements departmental priorities, policies, goals and objectives.
  • By exhibiting an excellent understanding of client drivers and needs, leads the departments in the resolution of client/patient issues and needs on a timely basis.
  • Manages and monitors all elements of quality and risk management, including staff training, orientation, and performance review.
  • Performs audits, surveys, and develops benchmarks and uses other quality tools to assess the quality of the department's services.

Education & Experience

  • BScN Degree required
  • Masters in a related health care field or equivalent experience and education in a related health care discipline preferred
  • Minimum five years' experience in acute care setting
  • Previous clinical leadership experience with the ability to motivate others

Skills & Abilities

  • Experience in working as part of an interprofessional team.
  • Effective human resources skills including the ability to coach, mentor, and enhance the performance of others
  • Excellent criticalthinking conflict resolution and change management skills.
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with patients/families, staff, physicians and the community in emotionally intense situations.
  • Demonstrated comfort with policy and procedure development and implementation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of staffing and scheduling needs.
  • Knowledge and experience of union contracts, language and implications.
