Located on the traditional territories of many Indigenous Peoples, including the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendate and Métis peoples and the treaty territories of the Haudenosaunee Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and Williams Treaties First Nations, The Regional Municipality of York is hiring a
Lead, Indigenous Relations Advisor.

This is a step on a journey very important to York Region. Extending our hand to work with First Nations peoples and communities is essential.

What you can expect to do in this position:

  • Lead York Region's response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, as well as policy, planning and program implementation for Indigenous engagement activities, relations, education and initiatives.
  • Lead and oversee assigned project activities and processes, working with internal and external partners to gather data, input, and leading practices to inform the organization's response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action responsibility.
  • Provides thought leadership and leads implementation, policies and programs to advance the vision of the Region as one of strong, caring, and safe communities.
  • Establish, coordinate, and support a staff committee focused on Indigenous engagement, which will be responsible for the development and implementation of Indigenous engagement plans.
  • Establish and maintains effective working relationships with Indigenous partners and others.
  • Represents the Region in participating in Indigenous and other outreach activities.

How do you qualify for this position:

  • Lived experience as a First Nations, Inuit or Métis person, as well as knowledge of the local Indigenous culture and Anishnabemowin, is an asset.
  • Successful completion of a University Degree in Social Science, Indigenous Studies, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related discipline or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years program and policy development and project management experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience related to Indigenous relations and engagement principles and protocols relevant to First Nations, Métis, Inuit and urban Indigenous Peoples, as well as experience gathering input and building consensus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the United Nations Declarations on the Rights of Indigenous People and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and respect of Indigenous Peoples, communities, histories, traditions, cultures and current state.
  • Familiar with First Nations, Métis, Inuit and urban Indigenous Peoples and organizations in York Region and beyond, governance protocols, policy priorities and perspectives.
