Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Chief of Workforce Support, the Safety, Health, and Wellness Supervisor is accountable for managing the Safety and Health & Wellness programs and services internal to FRS, including planning, development, implementation, and evaluation.


Integrating with Workforce Safety and Employee Health and the corporate strategies, this position applies leading health and business techniques in data collection, analytics, program evaluation, change management and process improvement to solve complex problems and optimize wellness outcomes for EFRS personnel.


This position develops partnerships and collaborates with key stakeholders to optimize the system of care, rehabilitation, and fitness within and external to EFRS.

The position will lead and supervise all members of the wellness portfolio, including the Mental Health Coordinator and three Team Leads (Peer Support, Ready to Work, and Health and Wellness) in alignment with Employee Services' programs and initiatives.

  • Create a collaborative trusting team environment which promotes high performance and collegial working relationships.   • Supervise, guide, and mentor the Mental Health Coordinator and three Team Leads (Peer Support, Ready to Work, and Health and Wellness), herein referred to as the Wellness Team
  • Promotes and supports learning and advancement of the Wellness Team, including intentional onboarding of the Team Leads into 2 year term positions
  • Actively promotes effective and collaborative relationships and the development of a culture that supports respect, trust, integrity and enables an inclusive environment
  • Work in partnership with Workplace Safety and Employee Health, develop, implement, and promote EFRS health and wellness goals, initiatives, strategies, policies, and processes, in compliance with Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) standards, legislation, and aligning with EFRS and the City's health and safety objectives
  • Oversee the development and implementation of all wellness programs, including fitness, peer support, mental health, and safety programs. Identify key alignments with City programs to reinforce corporate wellness strategies, and to modify/adapt those programs to meet the needs of EFRS staff
  • Oversee EFRS's occupational health clinic and coordinate the completion of annual medical evaluations for firefighters
  • Keep current with wellness trends and scientific literature; recommend new programs based on evidence and in compliance with appropriate standards (including NFPA), legislation, and laws

Qualifications:


  • A degree in Health Administration/Health Sciences, Health Services Management, or a related field with a concentration on occupational health and wellness; OR you are a Registered Occupational Nurse OR a Registered Psychiatric Nurse practitioner
  • At least 7 years of related experience in health and wellness management, occupational health and safety, and worker's compensation
  • 35 years of progressive clinical and leadership experience in a health and wellness environment, preferably within a multidisciplinary or occupational setting
  • Previous management experience preferably in a complex health and safety or medical health environment, which includes experience supervising employees, working with budgets, business planning and policy development
  • Demonstrated people leadership skills including performance development/management, team building and facilitation
  • Ability to implement and to ensure compliance with the CIty's policies and procedures
  • Ability to represent the Edmonton Fire Rescue Service and City of Edmonton in a professional, honest, respectful and safe manner
  • Solid understanding of health promotion, worksite wellness, and behavior change practices and measurement and evaluation strategies
  • Ability to solve problems and make independent decisions
  • Knowledge of clinical intervention and/or management of clinical care and complex case management
  • Knowledge of return to work assessments and functional capacity evaluations
  • Knowledge of assessment and treatment of mental health injuries
  • Knowledge of physical medicine assessment, treatment and rehabilitation
  • Knowledge of the development of therapeutic goals and customized treatment plans in a physical or mental health treatment setting
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and ensure all tasks are completed per work plan
  • Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision as well as in a team environment where work responsibilities depend on team cooperation/collaboration
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Google
