About the Opportunity:


The Community Outreach Worker, under the direction of the Manager of Support Services & Community Programs, is responsible for a wide range of services for clients of Mental Health & Addictions, including those related to tobacco use and nicotine addiction.

These services include early identification, intervention, assessment, referral, consultation, treatment planning, supportive rehabilitative counselling and follow-up.


This position assists the individual to adopt a healthier lifestyle by presenting appropriate options, alternatives and community resources, as well as delivering interventions aimed at increasing resiliency and positive coping skills both individually and in groups.

The Community Outreach Worker will be involved in the planning and delivery of programs in health promotion and programs based on community development principles.

The Community Outreach Worker is an advocate for the client and the community, creating links with the community and its agencies.

The Community Outreach Worker functions in collaboration with the Adult Outpatient team and other Mental Health and Addictions services in a consultative and cooperative manner.

Sound working understanding of the community health approach and community services systems is required.

This position is split between Truro and New Glasgow locations.


About You:

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work required
  • Current registration/licensure (or eligibility) with applicable provincial licensing body; must have completed registration/licensure before starting position
  • One years related work experience
  • Experience in group theory, design and facilitation preferred
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of education system, various treatment theories and practice approaches, other community groups, as well as an integrated level of knowledge and skills and techniques involved in the field of harmful involvement
  • Requires a good understanding of community organization and development with regards to addressing issues with substance abuse, problem gambling or other problem behaviour.
  • Non Violence Crisis Intervention training required or ability to obtain within six months of employment
  • Current BSLC required or successful completion within two months of employment
  • Demonstrated competence in electronic communication, excellence in Microsoft Office products, with an emphasis on database and internet proficiency required
  • Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other professionals, paraprofessionals and the community is required.
  • Accept and use constructive criticism for personal and professional growth
  • Supports and delivers quality patient safety standards within the health authority
  • Responsible for contributing to the achievement of the health authority's accreditation standards
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
  • Successful external applicants are required to provide a criminal record check (including Vulnerable Sector Search) to Human Resources before starting employment and assume any associated costs as a condition of employment

Compensation and Incentives:
