Position


Reporting directly to the Director of the X-Ray Crystallography Lab, the XRD Technician will be the primary technical and scientific support for the recently installed Bruker D8 Discover X-ray diffractometer and the forthcoming Bruker D8 Advance diffractometer (optimized for PDF studies).

The incumbent will be the department's leading expert on powder diffraction, responsible for the day-to-day operation of the XRD Laboratory, providing analytical services for a wide range of solid-state materials, and be responsible for the routine maintenance of the laboratory's X-ray diffractometers and equipment.

This position will provide training and support for the facility's users and ensure lab safety protocols are followed.

Furthermore, the XRD technician will provide assistance to the X-Ray Crystallography Laboratory, which provides single-crystal X-ray analysis for the Department of Chemistry.


Duties

  • Train new users teach theoretical aspects of powder Xray diffraction, proper sample preparation and mounting, data acquisition, data interpretation.
  • For research and/or teaching purposes: perform data acquisition, interpretation, and presentation of results.
  • Keep abreast of current literature to develop and recommend new data collection methodologies and upgrades to instrumentation.
  • Maintain equipment where needed, including liaising with instrument manufacturers, ordering spare parts, Xray tube alignment.
  • Expand technical capabilities of facility including reflectometry, lowtemperature diffraction, and total scattering.
  • Create standard operating procedures for routine procedures. Develop and implement data management and backup protocols.
  • Enforce and maintain safety documentation, including safety training forms, hazard assessments and incident reports.
  • Maintain clean and wellorganised laboratory; enforce safe practices.
  • Prepare and conduct Xray diffraction on select samples using Xray diffractometers.

Qualifications

  • Minimum M.Sc. in Materials Chemistry or related field, with expertise in powder Xray diffraction including variabletemperature data collection and analysis.
  • Three years of handson fulltime experience operating and maintaining Xray diffractometers and related equipment.
