GENERAL SUMMARY
Reporting to a Public Works Supervisor, Labourers at the District of Squamish play a key role in safely constructing,

improving, and maintaining essential community services. This position reports to a Public Works Supervisor and can be

found working across the District doing everything from gardening to cleaning out ditches or working in the Waste Water

Treatment Plant.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Main Duties and Responsibilities:


Customer Service:


  • Contributes to the success of our team, creation of our community, and delivers outstanding customer service by

with courage and enthusiasm, doing the right thing, and striving to do better every day.

  • Follows the District of Squamish's Customer Service Guidelines to ensure the Delivery of Outstanding Service.
  • Effectively responds to public enquiries in a timely manner in the absence of the Supervisor

Labourer Duties:


  • Provides maintenance, construction and labouring duties across the District on many key community services

including:

  • Water supply and distribution
  • Sewerage, drainage and dykes
  • Utility corridor management
  • Streets, lanes, boulevards, sidewalks and bridges
  • Solid waste reduction, refuse collection, disposal, and street cleaning
  • Parks and fields
  • Snow and ice removal
  • Provides guidance as team lead to other labourers
  • Performs flagging duties, directing or controlling traffic at work sites
  • Operates small equipment and use hand and power tools
  • Carries out the work in accordance with established safe work procedures and participates in Occupational Health
and Safety activities, tasks and duties as determined by their supervisor.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and precautionary measures as related to the operation of light
maintenance and construction equipment

  • Demonstrated physical strength, stamina and coordination to perform heavy manual outdoor work
  • Basic knowledge of the Operations Department assets and their maintenance requirements
  • The ability to operate small equipment safely
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to deal with people in a professional manner
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to multi task

Required Training, Education and Experience:


  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid class 5 BC Driver's license
  • Certified TCP (Traffic Control Person)
  • WHMIS
  • 24 months of experience in labouring work

Hybrid position; 3 days in roads, 2 days in parks.

29.91 per hour***This is a Union position within the Collective Agreement of CUPE Local 2269 and the District of Squamish.
