Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research.

Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.


Position Overview:


The Research Assistant will play a valued role in the Environment and Society Co-Laboratory by supporting ongoing team research activities.

Our new colleague's main purpose will be to review, collate, and summarize archival materials that have been collected on behalf of a community partner.

This position will provide support for important ongoing community-partnered research in the Environment and Society Co-Laboratory, all the while providing a training and capacity building opportunity for a student interested in furthering their academic training.

The Research Assistant will be directly supervised by Dr. Bullock, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Human-Environment Interactions.


This position will provide our new colleague with valuable experience in archival research, managing and organizing large amounts of data, summarizing historical data in a way that honours community partnerships, and experience working in a community-based research context.


Duties:


  • Assist with reviewing, collating, and summarizing archival materials which include text, maps and photos, and help prepare such materials for repatriation to the Indigenous community groups from which the knowledge originated.
  • Receive training in archival data handling, including working with provincial and federal archivists to find materials relevant to our partners.
  • Meet regularly with their supervisor and lab Research Associate for guidance.

Qualifications

  • Experience with the Microsoft suite of programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.) is required.
  • Experience with NVivo is an asset but not required

Condition(s) of Employment:


  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Students must be approved for the Work-Study program.
Students may be eligible for the Work-Study Program if they meet
all of the following criteria:


  • Currently registered in an undergraduate or graduate program at The University of Winnipeg (PACE and ELP students are currently ineligible).
  • Enrolled fulltime (i.e., at least 18 credit hours or 12 credit hours if registered with Accessibility Services) for the current Fall/Winter session.
  • Completed 24 credit hours at an undergraduate level at The University of Winnipeg (or equivalent);
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
  • Have demonstrated financial need (shortage between your expenses and resources).
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person or an international student with a valid study permit.


The period of work will be from
ASAP - March 15, 2023 and the estimated total hours of work will be
approximately 60 hours.
