About Our Opportunity:


As the Manager, Employee and Public Engagement, you will provide proactive leadership in building and sustaining a culture of staff, partnership and public participation in strategies and initiatives that are critical to advancing the department's vision of "Healthy Nova Scotians".

You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to activate engagement opportunities, sustain engagement platforms, facilitate topical conversations, improve communications, and build reciprocal trust with staff, community partners and Nova Scotians.

You will also support regular leadership communications and messaging involving the Deputy Minister's office and departmental staff.


The position reports to Director, Equity and Engagement Initiatives, with two direct reports (Project Manager, Employee Engagement, and Project Manager, Public Engagement).


Primary Accountabilities:


  • Provides leadership support to implement employee and public engagement strategies and reports, such as Employee Engagement Strategy, How's Work Going? Survey, community engagement conversations in health, and other related strategies and initiatives.
  • Provides outcomebased approaches in building and sustaining staff capacity through key employee engagement tables, such as the Employee Engagement Network.
  • Leads the development of a Public Engagement Community of Practice for staff, ensuring consistent approach, evaluation and practice of public engagement across the department.
  • Builds public engagement capacity and relationship between DHW and key health partners, such as NSHA and IWK. Ensures partners work towards holistic public engagement outcomes to inform health policies, programs and service delivery for Nova Scotians.
  • Supports partnerships at existing local tables that are important to inclusive and geographybased community engagement in health, such as the Community Health Boards in partnership with Nova Scotia Health.
  • Establishes and supports systemlevel engagement programs and hubs that are important to keep staff, partners and Nova Scotians engaged, such as SharePoint, EngagementHQ, etc.
  • Liaises with key educational institutions and grassroots organizations to promote and partner on the practice and importance of public engagement within the health sector
  • Builds community capacity and opportunities, through grants, mentorships and partnerships
  • Manages the development and/or operation of aspects of the internal and external communications by implementing direction from senior leadership.
  • Influences programs and legislation to establish collaborative relationships with a variety of stakeholders (internal staff, institutional stakeholders communitybased groups, advice to departmental leadership executive members to minister).
  • Ensures the effective management of human and financial resources by setting and evaluating staff performance, promoting diversity, and a healthy and respectful workplace.
