Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director, Athletics and Recreation, the incumbent is responsible for the leadership, and implementation of comprehensive and annual long-range sport
- specific high performance plans that are: athlete-focused, sport-centred, and outcome based. This role is responsible for ensuring optimum performance for Ontario Tech OUA varsity teams focused on sustained success in the pursuit of provincial championships. This role ensures Ridgeback Athletics is enhancing the mission, image, and reputation of Ontario Tech University and the mission and values of the department. The Manager will be a people-first leader who has a growth mindset and is committed to contributing to the positive and strong culture within the department.


The Manager will provide leadership and direction to the high-performance sport unit for the department's OUA teams, managing areas such as coach/staff development, home games operation, team travel, varsity scheduling, uniforms and equipment, sports information and marketing all while fostering relationships with local sport organizations including the OUA.

The manager enables a culture and environment where coaches, athletes and teams are fully supported in their pursuit of sport excellence.

The position requires strong internal and external collaboration with constituents including coaches, athletes, and alumni, athletics and recreation staff, as well as key campus and community stakeholders.

The position requires extensive organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple demanding priorities.

Flexible work hours, including evenings and weekends are required.


Responsibilities/accountabilities:


1. Leadership and Operations

  • Implementing short and longterm operational plans for varsity athletics at Ontario Tech aligned with the vision, mission and values of the department.
  • Providing leadership support to support staff, OUA sport coaches, as well as student staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain a high level of performance through effective hiring, supervision, performance review and development.
  • Managing varsity operations for intercollegiate teams (i.e. scheduling, equipment/uniform orders, clothing/merchandise, travel arrangements, meal planning, billing procedures and work study).
  • Assisting the leadership team managing sport specific varsity team program budgets, tracking special accounts for reporting purposes and developing budget submissions to ensure appropriate management and accountability of funds.
  • Contributing to the design and implementation of technology to assess the athletics programs, analyses studentathlete needs, promote continuous improvement and demonstrate program effectiveness and success.
  • Keeping abreast of current developments and emerging trends in varsity athletics through active participation in conferences and workshops, professional organizations, and research/literature.
  • Conduct program reviews and audits for the department to ensure procedures and processes are meeting the needs of users and are demonstrating financial responsibility. A consultative approach while conducting reviews includes students and key stakeholders. Ex) end of season team surveys

2. Athlete/team development and service delivery

  • Overseeing the delivery of high performance varsity programs to support OUA teams and athletes in reaching their potential. A large role in this is to ensure our procedures are up to date and being optimized appropriately.
  • Manages the promotion and organization of major celebratory events, including the Athletics Awards Gala, Athletic/Academic Awards Luncheon and team alumni events
  • Manages all aspects of varsity game logistics and events. This will include game requirements, staff supervision, technology and event planning.
  • Ensuring appropriate risk management procedures are being followed related to team travel and gameday operations.
  • Contributes to facilitating partnerships and positive working relationships with student leaders (RLC, BAA), Societies and Clubs, residence and other student services to support success and retention among studentathletes.

3. Partnership

  • Cultivating longterm relationships with studentathlete alumni, team sponsors and other agencies that may lead to additional teams support through donations and awards.
  • Work in partnership with the advancement office on creating new revenue opportunities through sponsorship, gifts/donations and special events.
