SCOPE

Reporting to the Director, Campus Wellness and Support Services, the incumbent is responsible for providing the university community with expertise, advice and assistance relating to the Academic Code of Conduct.

They advise students in the preparation of cases and where appropriate, advocate for students facing charges under the Academic Code of Conduct, the Code of Rights and Responsibilities, and other governing bodies.

They direct and maintain all aspects of the proper functioning of the Student Advocacy Office unit and its services.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administer the operation and service delivery of the Student Advocate Office. Assist in the development of longterm strategies for meeting the commitment of this unit to members of the university community.
  • Advise students and provide information on academic and nonacademic codes, policies and procedures.
  • Advise students and/or student advocates concerning difficult cases or new policies and procedures.
  • Analyze and strategize on each student case to determine what course of action to follow; prepare students for and accompany them to interviews with the Deans (or delegate) and/or a Hearing/Appeal Panel involving charges of academic or nonacademic misconduct, when necessary.
  • Assist students in the drafting and preparation of materials and arguments for interviews with Deans (or delegate) and/or Hearing Panel involving changes of academic or nonacademic misconduct.
  • Appraise and update the Director on complex issues and cases.
  • Hire, train, monitor, evaluate, and motivate advocates and student advocates; coordinate schedules and assignment of work and cases; monitor and maintain the quality of work.
  • Initiate and plan outreach activities, oversee the promotion of the Office in addition to enhancing the awareness of academic integrity.
  • Develop resources, and conduct information sessions and workshops targeted to specific groups of students and/ or faculty, with the framework of prevention.
  • Liaise and collaborate with various Departments, Faculties, Associate Deans and the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) regarding student cases and academic integrity outreach initiatives.
  • Participate in activities organized by units of the Student Services. In particular, they set up booths at information fairs held oncampus and offcampus as required.
  • Give information sessions, workshops and participate in panels dealing with academic integrity.
  • Participate in training sessions for Hearing Panel members.
  • Perform other duties in support of the operation of the unit.
  • Participate, as necessary, in revisions of the Academic Code of Conduct and the Code of Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Assist the Director with budget projections and future planning for the unit.
  • Keep up to date on best practices in supporting students with mental health and behavioral difficulties, attended trainings and professional development in this area.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and two to four years of related work experience in a postsecondary educational environment. in dealing with the Academic Code of Conduct, Code of Rights and Responsibilities and regulations.
  • Good spoken and written English and French (level 4) in order to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students and to draft correspondence, documentation, and reports.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Outlook,
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to develop a solid understanding of the processes associated with the management of a case such as the granting of Appeals, Appeal Hearings, and recourse to the Board of Governors.
  • Experience in dealing compassionately with individuals in sometimes difficult personal situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to deal sensitively with individuals.
  • Proven skills in managing multiple cases with mínimal supervision.
  • Strong planning, organizing, decisionmaking and problemsolving skills and advocacy skills.
