The Opportunity:An essential member of the CGMH team and Health Information Systems, as an expert in Health Information Management and leader in coding and abstracting with knowledge of PHIPA and release of information.


Qualifications:


  • Graduate of an approved Health Information Management Program.
  • Experience in Meditech Expanse is required
  • Must be a member in good standing with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) and Certified with the Canadian College of Health Information Management (CCHIM)
  • 5 years' experience coding/abstracting with both DAD and NACRS
  • Previous experience working in Release of Information would be considered an asset.
  • Indepth knowledge of CIHI's Guidelines/Principles, MED2020 Abstracting System and Microsoft Office Applications
  • Must strive to continuously provide a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff, physicians, and volunteers
  • Must adhere to the duties of workers, as stipulated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Must have an ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal) in the English language in order to provide excellent communication with team members, patients and families. Ability to communicate in additional language(s) is considered an asset.
  • Must have basic computer skills
  • Must be dedicated to professional growth & development
  • Must be able to perform all bona fide and essential duties of the position, which may include physical demands such as moving/transferring patients, pushing, pulling, bending, etc.
  • Must have demonstrated excellent attendance/performance record

Preferred:


  • Excellent organization and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work independently and effectively communicate with other members of the health care team
  • Health Information Management preferred
  • Knowledge of Meditech Client/Server is strongly desired
  • Experience in project management, and management of human and financial resources.
  • Experience and knowledge relevant to information privacy laws, release of information and access laws is considered an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Using CIHI Guidelines and Principles, Ontario MOH guidelines, as well as hospital policies and procedures code and abstract DAD and NACRS charts
  • Use the CMG and CACS grouping/assignment methodology to ensure data collection meets the standards met by the hospital, LHIN or Province
  • Ensuring data quality and accuracy through data validation processes. Generates reports and queries, then examines the results to identify discrepancies in the MED2020 system to guarantee accurate data
  • Communicate with physicians, nurses and other clinical staff on documentation issues that relate to specificity and accuracy of coding
  • Meet workload standards as required for the specific HIM assignment
  • Keep abreast with changes in coding practices, CIHI Guidelines/Principles and Hospital Policies and Procedures.
  • Participate in Coding Quality Improvement Workshops, Seminars, and Teleconferences
  • May provide occasional relief for release of information for noncircle of care requests
