As the Legal Counsel, Privacy, you will be responsible for providing a range of legal services and guidance to key stakeholders within the university to manage legal risks and further the university's mission, with a specific focus on information and privacy related services.

Responsibilities:

**Privacy Leadership and Strategic Development**

Foster a culture of information and privacy awareness
Provide expertise on access and privacy information
Build effective relationships to support privacy protection
Communicate legal advice clearly to the campus community
Represent the University before regulatory bodies
Stay updated on privacy regulations impact
Review legal records and precedents
Develop strategies to avoid legal challenges
Create and maintain privacy-related processes and policies

**Privacy Compliance and Legal Guidance**

Offer legal expertise on privacy laws
Analyze privacy laws and ensure compliance with university policies
Review agreements for privacy implications
Stay informed about privacy case law and legislative trends
Collaborate with legal counsel to implement privacy policies

**Responsibilities under FIPPA**

Develop processes for requests under FIPPA
Handle privacy access requests and applications
Collaborate with various university departments
Advise on compliance and data breaches
Manage departmental access policies

**Privacy Review and Response to Complaints**

Investigate privacy breaches
Consult with legal counsel on privacy matters
Provide breach responses as per protocols
Submit reports to regulatory bodies
Ensure concise communication on breaches
Establish guidelines for complaints and breaches

**Risk Identification, Assessment, and Training**

Audit privacy risks
Manage Privacy Impact Assessments
Evaluate risks and recommend mitigation strategies
Ensure compliance with privacy laws
Develop training programs for staff and students

**Operations & Systems Management**

Supervise Information Privacy Analyst and Coordinator
Maintain knowledge of privacy legislation
Create and update privacy guidance
Oversee data frameworks and statistics collection
Ensure records management

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent
Member of the Law Society of Ontario
Relevant professional designation in privacy
3-5 years' legal experience
Knowledge of provincial and federal privacy laws
Experience in privacy and data protection
Project management skills
Strong understanding of university operations
Excellent decision-making and conflict resolution skills
Collaborative and influential abilities
Adaptable to evolving privacy laws
Driven by equitable and inclusive practices
