Under the general direction of the team's Coordinator, the IT Database Specialist is responsible for supporting the database environments that make vital citizen services such as water supply, fire and paramedic response, transit and traffic signals possible.


As the IT Database Specialist
, you will**:

  • Monitor the day-to-day operation of databases and address any server performance or resourcing issues
  • Verify database backups are completed as scheduled and are complete
  • Ensure recovery RTO/RPO objectives are achievable and met when a recovery is required
  • Ensure data classification standards for databases are met by collaborating with business stakeholders; ensure database instances are located in the correct network security zone
  • Assist customers and DBAs (database administrators) with their schema level database support by updating server and infrastructure level database configuration as required
  • Verify database monitoring tools are in place and functioning correctly; addressing any detected failure promptly
  • Deploy database software and create new database instances as needed in the cloud and onpremise
  • Decommission database servers and instances that are no longer required
  • Troubleshoot technical and performance issues with databases in collaboration with customers, DBAs and other technical staff
  • Ensure database environment inventory and processes are properly documented and these documents are maintained and up to date
  • Prioritize and resolve incidents reported by customers and other support groups
  • Collaborate with other technical support groups, developers and business stakeholders to deliver business solutions
  • Collaborate with other technical support groups to develop and promote IT policies and processes
  • Support a range of technical environments required to deliver business solutions
  • Take staff or customers through a series of actions to help resolve issues
  • Liaise with consultants and vendors during system implementation and problem troubleshooting activities
  • Advise supervisor of any threats to service delivery
  • Coach and mentor junior team members
  • Other responsibilities as assigned
  • Maintain state of the art knowledge in IT by attending relevant courses, seminars, and by investigating and appraising new tools and technologies
  • Research software products, new tools and techniques and prepare recommendations.
  • Take an active role in recommending training and investigation into new technologies that could be of benefit to the City
  • Develop expertise in the City's information systems, business processes, and challenges to be able provide relevant advice and recommendations

Your education and qualifications include:


  • A University Degree in Computer Science or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with deploying, maintaining, and administering at a systems level, at least one of the database products utilized by the City within largescale business systems.
  • Experience with supporting other infrastructure systems (on premise or cloud) would be an asset.
  • Experience in analyzing system problems to carry out corrective actions.
  • Knowledge of the ITIL framework and experience with ITIL services (certification preferred) would be an asset.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with all levels of the organization and with external stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain effective and positive working relationships with teams, partnerships and alliances.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to be flexible and responsive to changing priorities and circumstances as well as the ability to work on diverse projects simultaneously

Conditions of employment:


  • The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional offhours.
  • Ability and willingness to be on call 7x24 on a rotating basis (approximately one week in six)
