The Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Lead of the Permafrost Carbon Feedback project (hereafter "Research Lead") will report to the Cascade Institute Research Director and lead all research and analysis activities associated with the Permafrost Carbon Feedback project.


Primary position outcomes:

  • Responsible for all data gathering, analysis, and writing for project deliverables, which include reports on (1) undercounted sources of permafrost carbon emissions, (2) the links between boreal forest wildfires and permafrost thaw, and (3) potential thaw mitigation interventions.
  • Contributes to the development of a funding proposal to better integrate permafrost processes into a fully coupled Earth system model
  • Engages with the international community working on different dimensions of permafrost research and policy, especially northern and Indigenous communities and ensures that their perspectives and voices are integrated into project deliverables
  • Leads the communication of research findings to stakeholders, with the support of other members of the project team
  • Manages all aspects of the Permafrost Carbon Feedback project with the support of the Research Director
  • Provides regular progress updates to the Research Director, project team, and advisory team
  • Plans and facilitates regular meetings with the project team and advisory team
  • Tracks all relevant project evaluation metrics
  • Prepares an evaluation report at the conclusion of the project for project funders


  • Job Requirements

  • Acknowledged expertise (PhD or equivalent demonstrated expertise) in environmental policy, environmental science, climate policy, climate science, science policy (or other fields related to permafrost carbon and the governance of permafrost carbon emissions)
  • Knowledge of the physical and/or biological processes associated with permafrost thaw and their linkage to carbon and climate processes would be useful
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary research projects
  • Experience identifying research gaps
  • Experience conducting systematic literature reviews
  • Experience engaging with stakeholders from a wide variety of groups, including northern and Indigenous communities
  • Experience communicating research findings to a wide range of stakeholders


  • Additional Information

  • This is a temporary, fulltime position working 37.5 hours per week from March 1, 2023, until February 28, 2024. The annual salary for this position will be between $70,000 and $80,000. The incumbent may work remotely and does not need to be based in Victoria. The University is pleased to offer a comprehensive benefits package.
