The Opportunity

These are the key commodities the next Legal Counsel, Commercial Marketing Law will assist TC Energy's Power & Energy Solutions business unit to buy, sell, trade and develop. Reporting to the Manager, Commercial Marketing Law, this professional will support our growing Power & Energy Solutions business in Canada and the United States. You will have the opportunity to learn from seasoned legal professionals as TC Energy expands its footprint across North America and designs fit for purpose energy solutions for a decarbonizing energy industry._


Our Power & Energy Solutions legal team is looking to add an #EnergyProblemSolver in Calgary to support negotiation of commercial marketing agreements and fill other legal support needs of TC Energy's Power & Energy Solutions business unit.


We are seeking a dynamic Legal Counsel who has knowledge and experience in corporate commercial transactions, energy commodities or other solicitor-side work and a willingness to learn.

This individual has the proven skills, competencies and capacity to work with a variety of industry-standard and bespoke legal agreements, identify legal risks and adapt to changing business unit priorities in the emerging specialties of renewable electricity, environmental commodities and commercial marketing law.

What you'll do- Develop expertise in physical and virtual Power Purchase Agreements- Create and update template commodity trading agreements- Support senior legal practitioners with initial review of agreements for the purchase, sale and trade of energy and environmental commodities, eventually progressing to independent responsibility for these agreements- Independently review and negotiate non-disclosure agreements and supporting documents for request for proposal processes undertaken by the Power & Energy Solutions business unit- Work closely with Market Compliance, Contract Risk and Counterparty Risk groups to address legal and contract risks while accomplishing business priorities

Minimum Qualifications- 3-5 years' experience in solicitor-side legal practice- LL.B, J.D. or equivalent from a recognized University- Active member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta or equivalent Canadian law society

Preferred Qualifications- Familiarity with US legal system and / or bar call in one or more US states- Familiarity with electricity markets, power generation and renewable electricity generation resources- Experience working with derivatives contracts, commodity contracts or other industry-standard form contracts- Have current, valid authorization to work in Canada- Have current, valid authorization to travel internationally (including but not limited to Canada, US and Mexico)- Be part of an on-call rotation as Legal representative in Corporate Emergency Operations Centre and provide emergency support as required- Successfully complete pre-employment Bankruptcy, Credit, Civil and Criminal background checks
