Youth Counsellor - Summer Student (2 Positions)
Department: Clarington Youth Centres (CYC)
Location: Clarington
Posting Dates: April 19, 2024 - May 13, 2024
Employment Group: CUPE, Temporary
Salary: $18.49 per hour
Hours: 35 hours per week, 8-week contract (July and August)
Shifts: In-office day shifts and in-centre evening shifts
Schedule: Monday-Saturday, varying between 8:00am-4:00pm and 1:00pm-9:00pm
Work Environment: In-office, community, and outdoors
Summary:
The Clarington Youth Centres (CYC) provide a range of programs for youth aged 12-19, focusing on social, recreational, and life skill development.
The CYCs operate as free after-school drop-in programs with activities centered around social/leisure, sports/recreation, life skills, creative/arts, and volunteer/civic engagement.
Key relationships involve the CYC Coordinator, JHS Durham management, service seekers, and community agencies.
Responsibilities:
- Support summer programming
- Outreach to businesses and community agencies relevant to youth
- Utilize social media to connect with youth
This role aims to develop youth-focused community events promoting empowerment and inclusion.
Specific Duties:
- Outreach to community partners
- Create partnerships with local businesses and groups
- Design, implement, and evaluate events
- Connect youth to programs and services
- Develop event marketing
- Attend meetings as necessary
- Prepare event reports
Requirements:
Education and Experience:
- Enrolled in relevant postsecondary education
- Community engagement experience
- Understanding of youth challenges
Personal Attributes:
- Passionate about youth work
- Initiative-driven team player
- Experience as a role model for youth
- Organized, creative, and fun
Technical Skills:
- Ideas for social media engagement
- Proficient in Windows NT/WAN systems
- Competent in Internet and Microsoft Office
Licenses and Certifications:
- Driver's license and liability insurance
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Crisis Intervention and ASIST Certification
- Police/Vulnerable Sector Check
Working Conditions:
- Ability to work in various locations
- Physical requirements including sports activities
- Possible lifting up to 35 lbs
