The Track Maintenance Delivery team is looking for an on-site field leader that will deliver operational plans for materials and equipment; carries out the maintenance and enhancement of Metrolinx owned track, right of way, and associated yard track infrastructure and equipment in a safe, efficient, and effective manner, and oversees the completion of assigned state of good repair projects in a safe, timely, standardized and cost-effective manner for quality services.


What will I be doing?

  • Plans, implements, supervises, and works on remedial maintenance and rehabilitation programs for Metrolinx owned track infrastructure, fixes track assets, property, and associated equipment by Metrolinx unionized forces within the Whitby yard
  • Coordinates fleet vehicle and equipment maintenance; sources service contracts for Track Maintenance vehicles and equipment
  • Supervises the maintenance and monitoring of all health, safety, and environmental protection systems and track equipment for compliance with corporate policy, legislation, and external stakeholders
  • Responds to emergency calls (e.g. yard derailment), evaluates situation, and determines appropriate response to minimize service disruptions and safely move equipment
  • Investigates and prepares incident reports for yard derailments and other critical problems (e.g. emergency call outs) that may affect service operation
  • Manages brush and vegetation, debris, and snow and ice control operations for the tracks and switches within the Willowbrook Yard
  • Uses inspection reports to plan and create work schedule.
  • Implements emergency measures to assure continued operation of track infrastructure and equipment, and to protect tenants, employees, and corporate assets
  • When necessary work with other Metrolinx departments to provide track protection or assist with work.
  • Identifies emergent maintenance
  • Monitor the current state of all infrastructure within the Willowbrook Rail Maintenance Facility yard and take s appropriate action to address negative trends before they have an impact on safety, operations or the budget.
  • Verifies the accuracy of contractor time sheets and expense claims.
  • Supervises 12 or more employees and participates in maintenance of tracks infrastructure and property and responds to problems to ensure that they are safe and operational and respond to the needs of user groups and contractors.
  • Assigns, inspects, and oversees maintenance work carried out by staff and contractors to ensure compliance with applicable procedures, specifications, standards, regulations, codes, safety requirements and processes in the daytoday operations; reports noncompliance issues
  • Assisting with technical training on operating procedures for equipment (e.g. man lifts and propane handling), and assists with conducting safety and technical onsite training to meet legislative and facility management requirements, and conducts inservice refresher training.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

  • Completion of a high school or equivalent diploma in a related field or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • Minimum four (4) years' related experience in a leadership capacity.
  • Proof of Track Inspection Guidelines Certificate and Canadian Railway Operating Rules or other required.
  • Experience with maintaining rail tracks, rights of way, and associated plant and yard track infrastructure and equipment.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills to respond to and evaluate emergency calls and determine appropriate response to minimize service disruptions.
  • Leadership experience to supervise staff and contractors engaged in track maintenance activities.
  • Interpersonal and oral/written/presentation communication skills to supervise timely preparation and processing of corporate and branch records, and prepare incident reports.
  • Ability to motivate peers, subordinates, and senior staff, and effectively manage the performance of a group of employees in a complex unionized environment.
  • All offers will be conditional upon successful completion of training in CROR and TIG within the first 6 months of employment.

Working Conditions:


  • Works a standard 40 hr. work week in an field / frontline environment. Normal physical effort, concentration and attention is required.
  • Position is required to be available outside of regular office hours
