Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS)

Casual Instructor - Continuing Education


CASUAL POSITION - $30.64 (uncertified) or $35.57 (OCT certified) per hour

SCOPE


Reporting to the Principal of Continuing Education and the LBS Program Manager, the incumbent is responsible for providing programs that develop literacy, numeracy and the Skills for Success skill list to help adults 19+ achieve goals related to further education or training, employment or increased independence.

Instructors provide support to learners by clarifying goals, then developing Learning Plans and implementing individualized programing to achieve them.


DUTIES

  • Use working knowledge of literacy, numeracy, and basic skills to develop activities, lessons and programs to meet a range of learner needs; knowledge of Skills for Success (formerly Essential Skills) and/or Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF) is an asset.
  • Commit to continuous learning.
  • Differentiate instruction based on learner need.
  • Use experience working with diverse, multi-barriered or marginalized populations to build a supportive and productive learning environment.
  • Utilize skill-based to a task-based approach to literacy service delivery with increased focus on the transition-oriented nature of programming.
  • Use computer technology as a creative means to teach adults to facilitate learning through technology
  • Utilize online EOIS-CaMS database system.
  • Track and document learner progress using expertise in goal-related counselling and task-based assessment.
  • Use awareness of local services and programs for appropriate referrals based on learner needs and goals.
  • Comfortably engage with learners via mobile learning -delivering lessons in a range of community settings.
  • Work effectively with diverse populations including people with multiple barriers to learning.
  • Develop and deliver targeted training programs for specific, short term training. For example, 6 weeks of apprenticeship math, Food Safety Training, Computer Skills, Soft Skills. Targeted training may be for specific audiences, for example, OW clients, youth, or older workers.
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of Employment Ontario and local community programs and services.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships through effective communications with administration, staff, Learners and the public.
  • Work effectively within a team and independently.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Teaching experience with adults who have learning disabilities an asset.
  • Experience engaging with a range of community setting that support diverse populations, including those facing multiple barriers or marginalization, an asset.

Preferred:

Bachelor of Education degree or Diploma in Education; Special Education qualifications preferred; Minimum three (3) years of successful teaching experience; member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers.


  • Will consider Certificate in Adult Education or other equivalent; minimum of three (3) years' teaching experience in an adult learning environment.
  • Background in literacy and/or mathematics
  • Ability to teach mathematics at least to grade 10. Up to grade 12, an asset.
