HOURLY RATE:$25.57
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for planning, purchasing and preparing nutritious meals for up to 75 children and staff, and to maintain a clean, sanitary and orderly kitchen.
This position reports to Child Care Manager and is part ofCUPE Local 2289.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Prepares and cooks 2 snacks and a hot lunch daily, including observing nutritional food requirement and/or restrictions due to special diets, allergies, special occasions, religion and/or culture.
- Purchase and order sufficient quantities of food within the budget, on a regular basis and from appropriate suppliers.
- Menu planning and posting of menus as legislation requires.
- Accepts and signs for purchase vouchers from food distributors and monitors delivery, ensuring that correct quantities are received.
- Maintain safety and cleanliness of the kitchen, kitchen equipment and food storage areas clean, and ensure equipment is in good working condition.
- Complies with health and safety routines and rules for safe working conditions in work area.
- Provide directions to Kitchen Helper, supply staff and students.
- Ensure the safe storage and handling of food and equipment.
- Ensure health regulations and sanitary procedures are adhered to.
- Use safety data sheet for information when using any chemicals for cleaning or washing dishes.
- Participate in fire drills.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school graduate with 1 year certificate in culinary and/or food handling preferred, and 2 years experience in food handling and cooking for large groups
- Recent demonstrated experience planning and serving meals to large groups
- Able to follow food limitations for those with allergies or cultural reasons for not consuming certain foods
- Knowledge of Canada Food Guide,
- Food Handlers certificate preferred
- WHMIS trained or willing and able to be trained
- Able to read, write, speak and understand English for the purposes of records of food usage/storage, health and safety and other training, ordering of food and suppliesetc.
- Ability to deal with routine financial transactions.
- Ability to lift heavy objects, reach below, at and above shoulder height, stand for long periods, use fine motor movements for cutting, etc.
- Able to manipulate utensils for fine motor activity i.e. cutting, slicing
- Able to adhere to tight schedules.
- Well developed organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with coworkers and children.
- A current police reference check is required, which may include a vulnerable sector check.
Salary:
$25.57 per hour
Education:
- Secondary School (preferred)
Experience:
- Cooking: 2 years (preferred)
Licence/Certification:
- Food Handler Certification (preferred)
- Culinary Certificate (preferred)
Shift availability:
- Night Shift (preferred)
