The Provincial Genetics Program (PGP) was established to ensure the provision of comprehensive, coordinated, evidence-based genetic services for Ontario.

Our work encompasses genetic services (genetic testing and genetic counselling) for rare and inherited diseases, hereditary cancer and tumour biomarkers.

The Specialist is primarily responsible for supporting the Manager and/or Team Leader in planning, developing and implementing initiatives and efforts related to clinical genetic services programs, collection and reporting of quality metrics (eg. wait times) and associated clinical quality improvement activities.

As part of this role, the Specialist develops and/or utilizes the required processes, tools, and technology to implement key activities and deliver on program plans and objectives.


This position will work closely with Clinical Leads of Genetics Expert Groups, the Program Head of the Provincial Genetics Program, and inter-departmental teams.


Here is what you will be doing:
The Specialist will be a key team member of the PGP working to:

Develop and maintain relationships:

  • Develops and maintains internal OH relationships to advance implementation of comprehensive, coordinated and evidence based clinical genetic services and genetic testing
  • Initiates, develops and maintains effective working relationships with external partners in clinical and laboratory genetics to keep up to date on current/emerging developments, quality improvement initiatives, and opportunities related to clinical programs
  • Proactively identifies and explores partnership opportunities to advance PGP initiatives/projects
  • Acts as the key representative/support for various clinical genetics related initiatives, as required to advance team goals
  • Participates in department and partner/collaborator meetings, working groups, committees, advisory groups, councils and/or other relevant meetings which may have an impact on project and/or program initiatives
  • Facilitates knowledge exchange activities to increase the impact and success of implementation
Data Analysis and Project Management- Works closely with decision support and analytics teams to understand datasets and analyze clinical and system-level data to help identify trends and clinical improvement opportunities (eg. collection, measurement and reporting of wait times for genetic services)- Defines project-specific scope and deliverables in coordination with leadership, with a focus on providing input on clinical implementation of high quality genetic services- Develops the required processes, tools, and templates in coordination with leadership to execute on the program/operational plan- Defines and implements required frameworks, methodologies and standards needed to support the program/operational plan- Works collaboratively with project support resources from both within and outside of the organization to align planning processes- Relies on clear communication processes to ensure relevant stakeholders are engaged throughout project lifecycles- Maintains documentation as required- Drafts and presents reports focused on the implementation of clinical genetic services as required

Issues and stakeholder management- Use excellent problem recognition and problem-solving abilities to handle complex problems and inform management of potential issues and associated solutions- Coordinates with leadership in assessing progress of program delivery and managing the various program/operational processes

Here is what you will need to be successful:

Education and Experience- Master's degree preferred or undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline (genetics/molecular biology, clinical epidemiology, health services research, business/health administration, sciences) or equivalent combination of education and experience.- Minimum three years of overall working experience, with a minimum of two years recent experience working within the healthcare sector.

Experience in clinical or laboratory genetic services preferred.- Knowledge of healthcare system, project management, best practices in quality improvement and performance management is preferred- Experience leading/enabling small to medium-scale strategic projects preferably related to the field- Demonstrated successful project management and change management experience (PMP an asset).- Experience with qualitative and quantitative analysis including systematic literature reviews.
