Power System Controller - Apprentice
WORK ILLUSTRATION:
The Power System Controller Apprentice is responsible for operating the electrical distribution system to ensure a safe, reliable and cost-effective delivery of electrical power on a 24-hour basis.
In performing this function, Power System Controller Apprentice monitors system conditions; develops, directs and dispatches system switching, work protection and trouble response for planned and emergency events under the direction of a Power System Controller.
The position runs on a rotating 24/7, 365 days/year shift schedule.
The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.

KEY RESPONSIBILTIES:
- Creates, updates, maintains and verifies logs, reports and databases to record system attributes during planned and emergency conditions
- Leads, distributes, follows up and checks work, answers inquiries and gives guidance as required
- Liaises, consults and coordinates with contractors, internal and external customers
- Operates the system to ensure the safe, reliable and cost effective distribution of electrical energy
- Monitors system loading and initiates appropriate action to achieve desired system performance
- Ensures proper isolation and work protection is provided for planned and emergency work
- Directs and dispatches field operations to complete planned and emergency work
- Schedules, plans and directs all switching operations to complete planned and emergency work
- Recommends changes and upgrades to the system to improve system performance and safety
- Maintains system maps, displays and schematics
- Informs other departments of emergency response status
- Supports and assists field crews in response to emergencies such as outages, accidents and spills
- Responds to after hour stakeout requests and initiate field response, if necessary
- Advises management of significant events
REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with one of the following: Electrical
Technology degree with a concentration on Energy Systems Engineering
- Familiarity with utility safety regulations and practices
- Demonstrated experience in a variety of business computer software packages
- Familiar with computerized, remote automated switching system
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Safety performance and familiarity with utility safety regulations and practices; adopts safe and efficient work practices, participates in job planning, risk reduction, and reports problems Customer Service and Trust; excels in providing timely and effective services and exceeding customer expectations
