Reporting to the Grounds and Garden Supervisors, the Groundsworker(s) will carry out year-round site maintenance of hard and soft landscaping at the designated location to provide clients and visitors with a clean, safe and attractive environment.
The main responsibilities of the Groundsworker(s) include, but are not limited to:
- Provides assistance in maintaining the attractive appearance of Government Centre grounds, working within the parameters of the grounds maintenance program and budget, and as directed by the Supervisor and Gardeners
- Assists Gardeners with planting and ongoing maintenance (planting, weeding, cultivating and watering) of annual flowers, trees and shrubs
- Prepares planting beds in spring and fall
- Carries out power sweeping and washing of sidewalks and hard landscaping
- Assists Gardeners in greenhouse
- Carries out garbage pickup duties year round
- Provide routine maintenance and quick response to conditions which affect safe site access for clients and visitors
- Provides snow and ice removal as well as sanding of slippery sidewalks and building entrances
- Provides litter and trash pick up
- Undertakes pruning of overhead tree hazards
- Maintains tools and equipment for good working order to support maintenance activities
- Assists in the operation of onsite irrigation systems
- Provides assistance in support of Department initiatives and as needed in support of special programs and events
- Provides manpower support for events organized by various Ministries
- Provides set up assistance for events sponsored by outside organizations in conjunction with Department supported special events
- Constructs and maintains a skating rink on the Legislature Grounds during the winter
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Some high school PLUS six months related experience or equivalent as described below.
Directly related education or experience considered based on:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
Special Requirement:
Physically able to perform horticultural/landscaping work - lifting 50 lbs. weight. Perform duties in adverse weather conditions.
Knowledge/Experience required:
- Valid Class 5 driver's license
Assets:
- Experienced in Irrigation Operations; Start up, operating, shut down of systems
- Horticulture or landscape maintenance hands on work experience.

Salary:
$1,669.09 to $1,950.32 biweekly ($43,563 - $50,903/year).
Notes:
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week - Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
