The vision for Parks and Roads Operation (PARS) is to inspire trust among employees, citizens and Council in our commitment and ability to maintain our city parks and roads infrastructure.

A Labourer II in Infrastructure Maintenance and Operations is a semi-skilled manual labour position. Tasks of this nature involve the use of some acquired skills.

Instructions are received orally from a supervisor and tasks are checked in progress and upon completion to ensure that instructions were properly carried out and meet with predetermined standards.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Operation of power tools, hand tools and small equipment, ie
  • shovels, rakes, line trimmers, walk-behind aerators, sod cutters, mowers, blower packs, generators, etc
  • Construction and repair of inventory such as home plates and tennis nets
  • Sports field maintenance, including leveling baseball diamonds and performing sports field rejuvenation activities (i.e. dethatching, aerating, fertilizing, topdressing, overseeding), often using tractors and pullbehind implements
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, breezeways, staircases, bus stops, facility entrances and parking lots using hand and power equipment, including power brooms, Toolcats and John Deere 72" mowers with broom attachments
  • Load and unload material from trucks
  • Turf maintenance and repair, including fertilizing, seeding, hydroseeding and leveling low spots
  • Assist litter crews in refuse collection
  • Operate and take responsibility for minor maintenance of one or more of the following: riding turf mower, linetrimmers (weedeaters), large rototiller, large tractor, water pump, push lawn mower, sod edger, paint sprayer and towbehind aerator
  • Inspect all equipment, to ensure that it is safe before starting a task
  • Paint lines on City of Edmonton sports fields and provide instruction and paint to loan out program users
  • Assist with brushing crew when required
  • Assist with yard duties when required
  • Operation of light delivery vehicles transporting material and supplies
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade
  • One year of experience in the field of turfgrass management or sports fields, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Good knowledge of the methods and practices used in operating and caring for equipment
  • The ability and knowledge to complete an equipment pretrip inspection on correlating equipment required for the task
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labour for extended periods of time under various weather conditions
  • Knowledge of the daily maintenance required on the equipment
  • Knowledge of the PARS Operating Procedures and SOPs
  • Emergency First Aid Certificate
  • Physically capable of performing the duties assigned to the position
  • Exemplary customer service skills
  • Ability to work and make decisions independently
  • Adaptable to changing priorities, whether because of managerial direction or weatherrelated factors
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License or operator's licensing equivalent recognized by the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation, Alta. Reg. 320/2002 and eligibility to obtain a City driver's permit
