Major Responsibilities:

The primary duties associated with this position include the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a Waste Transfer Station and associated equipment.


  • Performs duties in connection with monitoring incoming waste loads, maintaining the tipping floor, cleaning and removing contamination from recycling materials.
  • Operates controls for hydraulic compactors in order to load transfer trailers. Assists in hooking up, and unhooking transfer trailers from compactors.
  • Cleans up waste spills after removing transfer trailer from the compactor hooks. Cleans off loaded trailers and secures heavy trailer doors.
  • Communicates with staff regarding waste types and maximum weight requirements. Also communicates with transfer station customers.
  • Directs vehicular traffic in the tipping areas and acts as a signal person around the site and validates Dump Authorization Tickets (DATs) for authenticity.
  • Reports to Supervisor on unacceptable materials being dumped. Also Reports to Supervisor all incidents and/or Safety concerns on the tipping floor.
  • Assists with minor preventive maintenance duties, such as greasing and oiling, as directed.
  • General Site cleanliness duties.

Key Qualifications:


  • Must be physically capable of performing the required duties such as but not limited to: opening and closing heavy trailer doors, hooking up trailers to compactors and crank landing gears on transfer trailers, standing for long periods of time, using arms and hands for traffic direction.
  • Must be alert and aware of surroundings at all times.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying climatic conditions and tolerate noisy, dusty and odorous conditions.
  • Must be available to work shifts; such as days, afternoon and midnights; work weekends/overtime/on call duty and emergency situations.
  • Must be able to wear the prescribed safety Personal Protective Equipment, which includes, but not limited to; hard hats, safety footwear, respirators and hearing protection.
  • Must be able communicate and deal effectively with private and municipal truck drivers hauling waste to transfer stations and the ability to deal with customers in a professional and effective manner.

You must also have:


  • Ability to use good judgement in emergencies, such as fires and accidents.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must have the ability to operate hydraulic compactors.
