Job Summary
UBC Facilities provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia.
The Municipal Services group is responsible for providing waste management services, soft and hard landscape services, as well as moving and general labour services for all of the Vancouver campus.
This position works within the landscape crew; a team engaged in the care, ongoing maintenance and periodic renewal of gardens, lawns, shrub beds, and trees of 172 hectares of core campus grounds.
The Labourer performs physical work, operates specialized equipment, and performs maintenance work in the landscape crew; working within relevant safety regulations and in the safest, simplest, sustainable and most efficient manner.
This position may be required to work with other crews outside of Soft Landscape as needed.Organizational Status
The Labourer 3 reports to the Municipal Manager and receives daily work assignments and directions from the Sub-Head Landscape Technologist or Head Landscape Technologist.
Responsibilities are performed both independently as well as with Landscape Technologists and other Labourers, depending on the nature of the work.
Work Performed- Assists in soft landscape and other general labour duties including lawn and garden bed maintenance using specialized equipment and physical effort.- Assists in landscaping, maintenance, construction and development of lawns and planted areas of the University campus.- Operates light, medium and heavy vehicles and special construction and maintenance equipment (including, but not limited to, line trimmers, lawn mowers, backpack blowers, skid steers, tractors and backhoes)- May be required to monitor the work of a group of Labourers in an assigned area as designated by the Head Landscape Technologist or Sub-Head Landscape Technologist; participates in the work and ensures those under his/her jurisdiction work in a correct and safe manner.- Requests and receives tools, equipment and material for the work assigned.- Takes all required training to perform the job safely and is to be familiar with safety procedures and policies of the University.- Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
The Labourer 3 determines the most efficient and effective way to operate equipment to perform work; incorrect decisions generally result in minor delays.
The Labourer 3 reports to the Manager, Municipal Services and receives daily work assignments and directions from the Sub-Head Landscape Technologist or Head Landscape Technologist.
Supervision Given
The Labourer 3 may be required to monitor the work of a group of labourers in an assigned area to ensure work is being performed correctly and in a timely fashion.
Secondary school education and/or completion of high school, valid BC driver's license or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
