Empowered by the First Nations Leadership Council and in partnership with the provincial and federal governments, the BC First Nations Justice Council has been entrusted with the mandate to transform the justice system to create better outcomes for Indigenous people through the implementation of the BC First Nations Justice Strategy.

Position Summary:


The Policy Manager is responsible for development, maintenance and continuous improvement of GSD policy and product standards, and for the quality and content of the GSD's external agreements with justice system institutions.


As the Policy Manager, you are well versed in the development and implementation of policy, related to the goals of the BC First Nations Justice Strategy, with specific reference to Strategy #6.

You are a critical thinker, ready to solve problems before they become obstacles.

As an expert communicator, you can develop partnerships within the criminal and social justice systems, Indigenous communities, and communicate clearly and compassionately, as well as demonstrate a high level of ethical behaviour.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Manage the development and implementation of new or modified policies, and programs related to Gladue Services, including partnerships and working relationships with criminal and social justice related ministries
  • Assist the Director of Gladue Services in planning and implementing the BC First Nations Justice Strategy
  • Support in overseeing and supervising the support staff relevant to your role within the Gladue Services Department
  • Adhere to and encourage compliance with regulations and internal policies, in addition to developing and implementing new internal policies for GSD staff
  • Assist in staffing duties such as recruiting, training and performance evaluations/management
  • Develop and implement policy and standards that seek to professionalize the role of Gladue Services in the criminal justice system, including training, professional standards and association for Gladue writers, contractors and Gladue Services Department staff
  • Work with other members of leadership on budget planning
  • Develop and implement tools to gather statistics for the Gladue Services Department
  • Support the strategies of the BCFNJC through an Indigenous lens
  • Respectfully and appropriately incorporate Indigenous knowledge, customs, and traditions into our organization
  • Work with other members of the leadership team to monitor and report on the progress of the organization's strategic objectives
  • Draft, proofread, and prepare communications, presentations, and reports
  • Complete other projects and initiatives as required, as determined by the Director of Gladue Services

Qualifications & Work Experience:


  • Education in law, policy and administration, preferably with a Law degree from a Canadian law school
  • Experience working in a similar role or at a senior management level or the equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system, history of Gladue
  • Experience in performance and operations management
  • Critical thinking and problemsolving skills
  • Sense of ownership and pride in your performance and it's impact on the organization's success.
  • Experience facilitating issues in a highly sensitive environment; setting priorities and making decisions between high profile and competing needs; working with a diverse constituency; leading and supervising staff/contracted service providers
  • Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures is preferred
  • Knowledge of MS Office programs including (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Experience in managing employees, coaching, and mentoring staff
  • Selfmotivated individual with the ability to work with mínimal supervision in a teamoriented setting
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and take initiative
  • Accomplished at communicating and collaborating with remote teams
  • Ability to travel to our various offices from time to time

Reporting:
This position will report to the Director of Gladue Services


Location:
Remote Position, with 4 work weeks per year in Westbank, B.C.


Pay Range:
$80,000 - $90,000 annually

Hours:
Full-time (35 hours / week); Mondays to Fridays
