The Safety Engineering department is responsible for the safety of the products and project solutions developed and deployed by the Thales Urban Rail Signaling business line and compliance to safety principles, railway specific standards, norms and best practices for the development of safety-critical systems.


Under the supervision of Senior Technical Safety Specialist, the Safety Specialist is responsible for the execution of Safety Engineering activities in accordance with the company's process, applicable International railway standards (CENELEC, IEC, AREMA...), best practices and sharing expert knowledge.


Essential Functions / Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Electronics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a Technical role in in Safety engineering, Safety Assurance, RAM, Train Control System and Automation, CBTC System, Railway Signaling, ERTMS.
Relevant Safety engineering experiences in other industries such as aerospace, defense, automotive or nuclear could be considered case by case

  • Knowledge of Urban and Railway Signaling systems, CBTC Systems, Train control and Automation, Fixed and Moving block Signaling principles, relaybased and/or computerbased Interlocking design
  • Good understanding of systems engineering, all V Cycles, software engineering and functional safety
  • Detailed knowledge of system safety lifecycle, system requirements definition, safety design concepts (system and software), safety and risk analysis
  • Experience with International standards (CENELEC EN 50126, EN 50129, EN 50128, IEC, IEEE, MIL, AREMA ), best practices, safety methods and techniques (HAZID, HAZOP, PHA, SHA, SSHA, OSHA, FTA, FMEA/FMECA, FSA)
  • Good technical writing skills, excellent communication and analytical skills; excellent command of the English language, both written and oral

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.Sc. in Electronics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience in Safety Engineering for CBTC and Signaling Systems
  • Working knowledge of Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) and/or Solid-State Interlocking (SSI)
  • Member of Professional Engineer of Ontario (PEO) or Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE) is preferable
  • Ensure that the Safety Engineering activities are executed in accordance with the company's process, applicable railway standards and best practices
  • Perform Hazard Identification Studies (HAZID, HAZOP)
  • Preform and lead all Hazard Analyses (PHA, SHA, SSHA, OSHA, FTA)
  • Preform and lead Safety Analyses using the following methodologies (FFMEA, FMECA, FSA)
  • Manages the System Hazard Log and the Closure (resolution) of pending points
  • Carries out the Safety Analysis at system and subsystem levels
  • Review the adequacy and completeness of the safety evidences and produce the corresponding Safety Case artifacts
  • Define safety requirements; analyze and evaluate design compliance with safety requirements and safety principles
  • Work as part of an integrated project team, promoting the company's safety policy and best practices
  • Report directly to the Manager, Safety Engineering Team and liaise with the Chief Safety Architect
