Payroll Manager


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide timely and highquality payroll operate services that exceed client expectations including daily contact with EY Canadian payroll team to ensure payroll services are delivered on time and accurately
  • Demonstrate professionalism through a positive and cooperative attitude and by maintaining the confidential and proprietary nature of client relationships and related work products and responding to queries from clients and internal stakeholders in a timely manner
  • Build internal EY and client relationships and demonstrate knowledge of client businesses
  • Help to develop and guide staff and other junior professionals by providing effective performance feedback and ensuring team responsibilities are consistent with skills and developmental goals
  • Support the collection of client data as per agreed payroll calendar and other requirements and conduct review of each payroll run for each client assigned
  • Ensure accurate employee records are maintained in EY's payroll database e.g.; new hires, salary changes, terminations, etc
  • Ensure the payroll processes/procedure documentation is relevant, uptodate and is used at all times
  • Take ownership of client payrolls assigned including additional tasks & projects and has ability to make decisions and while having a strong ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines
  • Involvement & leadership in year end processing of Tslips and related client filings by applicable due dates
  • Contribute to the overall success of the team by developing a thorough understanding of EY methodologies and tools to enhance payroll service delivery; keeping team members informed of work status; actively seeking assignments when unassigned; proactively seeking opportunities to provide payroll services; challenging traditional procedures used in the past; and attempting to find new approaches and process improvement opportunities
  • Manage client escalations and ask/refer to senior team members for help


Reporting to the Payroll Operations Leader Canada, and working as a member of the payroll team, this role is responsible for the efficient processing of the various client payrolls assigned and the related day-to-day payroll client demands including year end processes and filings.

In addition, this role offers the opportunity to be a critical team member in the implementation of payroll for new clients and testing of new/enhanced payroll systems.

You should be highly motivated, analytical, logical thinker and have a very strong attention to detail.

Being a strong team player is critical with the ability to adapt to changing requirements or deadlines in support of our clients' goals.


Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Complex payroll knowledge across Canada (including Quebec)
  • French / English bilingual ability an asset
  • Understanding of complete payroll cycle and other related finance activities banking and the payroll journal entry
  • Excellent managerial, organizational skills with a proactive approach to problem solving and strong willingness to learn
  • Strong analytical skills, interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong numbers acumen, including analytical abilities and proficient skills in Excel (Vlookup, macros, pivot tables, etc) and Payroll Software set up and testing
  • Problem solving with ability to ask for assistance when necessary
  • Possess a collaborative approach combined with a proactive, enthusiastic attitude
  • Client service skills
  • Understand EY methodologies/tools to enhance service delivery, challenge current procedures to find new approaches

Supervision Responsibilities

  • Managing and interacting with a wide variety of local and global team members per client engagement
  • Being a counselor and or coach for staff members

Education

  • Bachelor's degree and relevant postgraduate qualification preferably with an emphasis in accounting, business or finance

Experience

  • 5+ years of relevant payroll or equivalent experience in business or industry
  • Experience with payroll software set up &/or testing
