This temporary bilingual (French/English) position at J.H. Picard School manages and is responsible for the operation of the school library, teacher resources centre and computer laboratory. The job maintains enhances and expands the school's collection and maintains the computer laboratory to support current curriculum. The computer laboratory includes iPads kits, laptop carts and the laptop booking system.

As the successful incumbent in this position, you will supervise and assist students working in the computer laboratory, and perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance on the computers.


DUTIES

1. Library orientation

  • Manage all library operations including classification, indexing, cataloguing, shelving, deletion and inventory
  • Receive new books, enters into database system, bar codes, spine labels, and other preparatory responsibilities
  • Develop library procedures and policies
  • Check books and materials in and out of the library
  • Issue student identification and library cards
  • Enter and update student information on the library system
  • Repair damaged books
  • Identify overdue books and followup with student notification
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance of computers
  • Maintain audio visual equipment and resources
  • Develop and maintain library usage schedules

2. Manage library purchases

  • Consult with the principal and teachers to determine purchases for library and resources to supplement the curriculum
  • Research and identify best price and supplier for approved material
  • Order approved purchases using procurement card or purchasing requisition
  • Monitor and maintain library budget
  • Inspect purchase on receipt to verify order against invoice

3. Orientation and reference support

  • Guide students and teachers in finding and using library resources, including reference materials, audiovisual equipment, computers, and electronic resources
  • Assist students with Web and library searches for information and material
  • Provide orientation for students to computer programs used in the library
  • Supervise groups of students in the library

4. Inventory control

  • Maintain and monitor inventory of teacher resources materials and books
  • Maintain and monitor inventory of resources in classrooms
  • Maintain and monitor inventory of computers, projectors SMART boards and other technology

5. Resource support

  • Create displays, bulletin boards to linked events, themes and seasons
  • Consult with teacher and administrators to determine materials for displays
  • Research information and develops materials and resources for display purposes

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School, plus a diploma in Information Management or Library Technology, plus three years of directly related experience
  • Knowledge of integrated library automation system and customer service principles
  • Basic knowledge of computers and software to resolve problems and perform troubleshooting
  • Basic fluency in French required; intermediate to advanced French language skills preferred
  • Knowledge of financial policies and procedures, and records management principles
  • Knowledge of project management and inventory control techniques and principles
  • Understanding of Division resources in order to acquire free and purchased materials that are appropriate for the library
  • Knowledge of Microsoft programs including Office 365, Word, Excel, Publisher, Outlook and Internet Explorer
  • Knowledge of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Legislation specifically related to student records management
  • Knowledge of Workplace Safety and Occupational Health and Safety regulations
  • Awareness of the curriculum and an understanding of Alberta Education policies and procedures
  • General knowledge of the Division's operations and the school' programs required
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (in the case of a language location, verbal and written skills necessary for that particular location)
  • Strong research, problemsolving and needs assessment skills
  • Strong time management skill with the ability to balance conflicting priorities
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic computer problems
  • Ability to develop and maintain contacts with clients, students and parents requiring tact and courtesy
