At the Upstream Lab, our research is driven by the desire to promote health equity and address social determinants of health.

Our research focus is broken down into four streams: 1) Integrating health and social care by addressing social needs of individuals in the healthcare settings; 2) population health management; 3) data to enable proactive care and 4) Trials.


We are currently looking a
6 months full time
Research Assistant II, with a possibility of extension,
to support various projects across our lab, including qualitative and quantitative research.

This position will require the successful applicant to perform duties predominately in person but may involve remote tasks as well.

Integrated within a busy, multidisciplinary team, the successful applicant will work closely with research staff, and report to the principal investigator and/or research program manager.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Onsite recruiting, screening, and consenting participants in clinics/Emergency Departments within GTA.
  • Conduct nasal swab testing to patients with COVID19 symptoms.
  • Collect, transcribe, organize, quality control, and data enter study related data.
  • Develop and maintain accurate records of participant¿s data and progress during projects (including eligibility criteria, recruitment info, sample collections, followup, and results of tests, and other relevant information).
  • Administer quantitative/qualitative surveys to study participants at participating community or health organizations using online survey tool (data collection).
  • Follow strict protocols for participant interactions.
  • Facilitate compensation of study participants under direction of study team/PI.
  • Act as the onsite point of contact for the studies at participating community/healthcare, Emergency Departments and other organizations.
  • Provides administrative support to Principal Investigator and Research Program team members
  • Assist in literature searches and reviews.
  • Conducts citation and full text screening for systematic reviews.
  • Extraction of data from literature.
  • Support manuscript preparation (providing overviews of methodology, and data collection metrics), and submission.
  • Organize video/teleconference meetings for research studies, including contacting attendees and preparing meeting materials.
  • Maintain calendars, and manage complex scheduling requests.
  • May assist in training research students, and new recruits (Research Assistants) in collecting data, and recruitment.
  • Assists with outreach to clinics, community centers, Emergency departments and other organizations within the GTA.
  • Performs other duties as required, including admin tasks.
  • Travel within GTA may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors of Science degree and 1 year of relevant experience, or demonstratable equivalent combination of specialized education and experience.
MSc or MPH preferred.

  • Experience with recruitment in various health care/research settings
  • Clinical skills for working with vulnerable groups is preferred
  • Awareness of social determinants of health, sensitivity and awareness of issues impacting research participants
  • Ability to learn and use reference management systems, and research databases
  • Experience with REDCap, preferred.
  • Familiarity with online databases of peer reviewed literature (i.e. Medline, PubMed, PsychInfo) an asset
  • Experience with REDCap
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical and scientific terminology
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are necessary
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills
  • Excellent organizations skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment, with flexibility to adapt to changing workload
  • Able to keep written records, and take meeting minutes
