Within the mission and philosophy of CMHA TVAMHS and the values of Peer Support Canada, as the Peer Support Worker, Street Outreach you will utilize your lived experience with mental health and/or addictions to provide formal Peer Support While working in diverse settings, including in street outreach (e.g., downtown core streets, encampments, housing sites), in community-based venues, hospital, or other healthcare settings.

You will lend your expertise of lived experience in the areas of community inclusion, service engagement, and wellness programming through individualized supports and group facilitation.

This position is primarily St. Thomas focused, with occasional visits to surrounding areas in Elgin County.

WHAT WE'RE OFFERING:

What you'll be making - $27.84 per hour

When you'll work:

  • 40 hours over a two week period; shifts may include days, afternoon, evenings & weekends

HOW YOU WILL BE MAKING A DIFFERENCE:

  • Utilize own lived experience (intentionally sharing own path to wellness and self-discovery as well as knowledge of services and potential resources) to support participants in their journey.
  • Practice and model the values, evidencebased core competencies, and standards of practice endorsed by Peer Support Canada
  • Facilitate a traumaandviolenceinformed, strengthsbased approach to care that emphasizes the importance of hope, selfdetermination, and empowerment.
  • Maintain healthy boundaries within the supportive, collaborative peer working relationship.
  • Facilitate social/support/life skills groups based on recovery and wellness principles for participants in hospital and in community.
  • Provide active, supportive listening and assistance with wellness planning, including support with advocacy as needed
  • Ensure compliance with agency Privacy, Confidentiality, and Code of Ethics policies and procedures, as well as the Peer Support Canada Code of Conduct
  • Identify and respond to the concerns of peers experiencing mental illness, substance abuse, trauma and/or homelessness.
  • Assist peers to connect to other community resources through experiential knowledge.
  • Ensure groups provide a safe and accepting space where peers can gather to support themselves and each other in a mutually beneficial way
  • Be an active contributor to the Peer Support Program team and work collaboratively with the Street Outreach team and other stakeholders, providing knowledge and awareness of the vital role of peer support.
  • Report on program progress through effective communication with other team members.
  • Keep uptodate on peer supportrelated topics and evidencebased practices.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities as offered by the organization; peer support meetings and reflective supervision.

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • Lived experience with mental health and/or addictions
  • Willingness to selectively share personal information that is relevant to a situation, and for reasons that are beneficial to the client
  • Strong belief in an individual's right to selfdetermination; to choose their own unique path to recovery
  • Ability to effectively provide empathetic and supportive direction
  • Active listening skills
  • Strong relationship building skills
  • Demonstrates good judgement regarding boundaries and limitations related to peers' concerns
  • Knowledge of mental health and social services systems and peer rights
  • Comfortable working in 1:1, team, group, and community setting
  • Ability to proactively address /mediate interpersonal conflicts with others
  • Interpersonal communication skills
  • Planning and organizational abilities
  • Computer skills
  • Ability to attend work regularly

  • Peer Support Canada Certification
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • ASIST or safeTALK
  • Crisis Prevention Institute Non-Violent Crisis intervention training
  • Conflict Resolution Training
  • Previous Peer Support an experience an asset
