Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking an Accessibility Assistant for a casual appointment with our Access and Disability Resources (ADR) and Exam Services Centre, whose mission is to collaborate with the MacEwan University community to facilitate full access for students with disabilities.
You will provide assistive services and facilitate the provision of the academic accommodation determined by the professional resource staff of ADR, that are necessary to achieve the goal of full participation for each student with a disability.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assessing and reporting on the classroom needs of individual students;
- Performing inclass or laboratory tasks under the student's direction that the student cannot perform independently or easily;
- Assisting students in recruiting peer notetakers;
- Setting up, training, and providing support with assistive technology;
- Helping students learn the library research process;
- Providing study skills instruction;
- Transcribing notes and assignments;
- Fulfilling the role of reader, scribe, notetaker, or other support;
- Providing mobility assistance on campus; and
- Providing social coaching or mentorship for students.

Skills
You will have:
- The ability to work within and contribute to building and maintaining an effective team environment;
- Creative and effective problemsolving skills;
- Strong customer service skills;
- A highly developed ability to effectively support individuals experiencing emotional distress;
- A highly developed ability to address and redirect disruptive behaviors;
- Strong word processing skills, including keyboarding;
- Proficiency with standard computer technology and specialized assistive technology (including, but not limited to text to speech, enlargement, accessibility tools, voice recognition, etc.);
- Effective communication skills; and
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of an Educational Assistant diploma
- A minimum of 5 years' related experience.
- Direct experience working in the human services field with people with disabilities preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
