The British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF), established in 1917, is the union of professionals representing 49,000 public school teachers in the province of British Columbia, Canada.

All public school teachers belong to the BCTF and their local teachers' association.

The role

As a member of the Maintenance Department, the Maintenance Worker provides janitorial, security, first aid and emergency services during weekend daytime hours following clearly prescribed standard practices and procedures.


Principal duties and responsibilities

  • Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, and buffs, floors; vacuums carpets; cleans furniture, windowsills, equipment, washes office windows, walls, cleans carpets and upholstery.
  • Empties wastebaskets, etc.; disposes of garbage, shredding, and recycled goods.
  • Cleans and sanitizes washrooms by scrubbing toilets, sinks and fixtures, washing floors, and wiping counters and mirrors; replaces stock of paper towels, toilet paper, paper cups, soap, etc. Cleans workrooms.
  • Provides for the security of the BCTF building by ensuring doors are on security at the appropriate time. Maintains security by responding to security concern calls. Ensures unauthorized persons leave the building by escorting them out or calling the authorities. Upon request, escorts staff to the parking garage.
  • Records alarm calls and responds to computer room temperature alarms. Calls appropriate service providers or contacts.
  • Answers maintenance cellular telephone to respond to BCTF staff, member, tenant, and service provider calls.
  • Follows established procedures to provide appropriate facility service in an emergency situation by contacting appropriate service providers, fire fighters, oncall contacts, etc.
  • Sets up meeting rooms as required by unlocking doors, arranging seating, delivery and setup of audio‐visual equipment, and/or coffee urns and supplies; returns equipment and/or supplies after use.
  • May be required to assist in moving heavy equipment, supplies, or furniture.
  • Cleans boardrooms/meeting rooms of mugs/supplies from Friday night and Saturday meetings and washes mugs. Makes coffee for meeting attendees.
  • Admits meeting attendees, service and delivery agencies and escorts them to appropriate areas.
  • Works on janitorial projects as required, i.e., pressure washing, gardening.
  • Acts as the First Aid attendant and performs related duties when required.

Required experience
One year experience in janitorial work in an office environment preferred.

Required education/training

  • Completion of Grade 12, plus on the job training, janitorial, building security and emergency services procedures.
  • WHIMIS certification, or willingness to acquire WHIMS certification
  • Occupational First Aid Level 2, or willingness to acquire First Aid Level 2 certification.

Please note, the designated workday and hours for this position are Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
