Position Overview:

  • We are looking for a Forestry Technician to support the implementation and operationalization of Kitchener's Sustainable Urban Forest Strategy with a focus on ensuring that the City's urban forest asset of 70,000+ street and park trees, as well as 1000+ hectares of natural areas are managed for longevity and continue to provide benefits to future generations.

This Forestry Technician plays a key role within the Forestry team by actively participating and being involved on various urban forestry projects and performing work ranging from inspections and monitoring associated with the City's tree planting program, stump removal program and other tree maintenance tenders/contracts, to performing site inspections to identify risks and hazards on City road reconstruction and development projects in support of resource protection and tree conservation goals, and the review and inspections of trees planted in new subdivisions and on City-led Park development and rehabilitation projects.

This position will act as the primary lead on the City's on-going inventory of City trees along streets and in parks by measuring and assessing tree health, structure and risk (level I and II) and through this daily work will also identify, monitor, survey for and help with treatment techniques for urban forestry pest populations and tree diseases.

Responsibilities:


  • Performs regular field work using specialized tools (tablets, digital apps, and Fieldmaps) to keep the City's tree inventory uptodate and accurate.
  • Collects tree inventory information identifies tree species, determines tree ownership and assesses the trees health, structural and risk attributes.
  • Identifies viable potential tree planting locations based on set criteria to be used for future tree planting planning necessary to increase Kitchener's tree canopy.
  • Performs inspections and monitoring of newly planted trees along streets and in parks for initial and final acceptance.
  • Participates and guides resident led, City supported projects both during the planting stage and as part of the warranty acceptance process.
  • Reviews drawings and assesses potential tree impacts based on planned construction projects and recommends tree maintenance, tree removals and tree protection measures for existing city tree assets, as well as tree compensation or planting options.
  • Monitors and inspects construction projects to ensure tree protection measures are in compliance with specifications, document unauthorized tree damage and assess fines for tree damage when necessary.
  • Enforce requirements for protecting existing trees, replanting and restoring planting environments to ensure compliance with permits and other forestry policies.
