Purpose:

Among a range of services, Osgoode offers its students skilled and knowledgeable career programming, academic advising and individual counselling in order to support student success in an increasingly competitive academic and employment environment.

As an experienced clinician, the Counsellor will help students to develop and fulfill their personal and academic potential while at law school through the provision of counselling, advising, referrals, wellness, and crisis intervention services.

The Counsellor provides supervision to interns, residence fellows and peer support mentors as they provide direct service to students, consultation to faculty and staff, and outreach activities.

The Counsellor will also play a key role in advancing an inclusive campus environment through program and policy development and implementation.


Education:

Masters or PhD in Clinical and/or Counselling Psychology or related field or MSW (Master of Social Work) is required. Juris Doctor is an asset.

Also required registration with the College of Psychologists of Ontario, the College of Psychotherapists of Ontario, or the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, or holds the designation of 'Canadian Certified Counsellor' from the Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association.


Experience:

Minimum 3-5 years of relevant clinical and counselling/psychotherapy experience, preferably in a post-secondary setting and/or in a legal setting. Demonstrated direct service experience in providing individual and group counselling as well as implementing a wide variety of interventions.


Skills:


Well-developed knowledge of the principles of mental health assessment and counselling and demonstrated ability to direct the processes that lead to change and personal development.

Well demonstrated knowledge of career development theories and models, particularly within the legal profession.
Skilled in crisis intervention theories and methods to safely and effectively work with students in crisis.
Ability to foster a barrier free environment of trust and collaboration in support of students.
Skilled in workshop development and facilitation.
Willingness and ability to work effectively as a member of a clinical and/or administrative team.
Demonstrated skill in the training and supervision of counsellors/psychotherapists-in-training.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Excellent tact and diplomacy is required in working with a diverse student population.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Knowledge of community resources and the consultative skills to maximize their use.
Proficient with MS Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and web based mail.

Compensation:


York's CPM Compensation Framework has a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.

Employees will receive the grid adjustment and depending on performance, eligible permanent employees may move to the next step of the grid and may receive a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.
