About the role


General Accountability:


The responsibilities of the High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry Team Lead include overall operation supervision as well as leading the research and development projects in the department.


Specific Responsibilities:


  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Promote a safety culture by communicating and upholding ALS Group Health and Safety & Environment policies and programs.
  • Plan and execute R&D projects and seek related accreditations as per ALS Quality Manual System in collaboration with the Technical Team.
  • Ability to operate and maintain LC/MSMS and GC/MSMS instruments.
  • Daytoday coordination of team personnel and resources to maximize production, quality and efficiency.
  • Ensuring processing of work in a timely fashion so that client turnaround times and holding time requirements are met.
  • Performing detailed data review, interpretation and processing of data.
  • Ensuring methodologies and accreditation requirements are met and documented.
  • Coordinate internal and external audits for the department and ensure timely resolution for the findings.
  • Investigation of any missing or suspect data or information, including rechecks and CARs.
  • Ordering of stock and nonstock supplies.
  • Monitoring analytical standard use and organizing the preparation of analytical standards as needed.
  • Ensuring all equipment maintenance and calibration is properly planned, conducted and documented.
  • Informing Manager of any issues related to production, quality and efficiency within the team.
  • Notifying Manager or technical support of any issue related to facility, equipment and supplies.
  • Ensuring that all required recordkeeping and documentation are carried out within the team.
  • Ensuring all tasks and procedures are carried out as specified in the documented methods and procedures.
  • Provide input on current methods and procedures.
  • Bringing staff concerns to the attention of management.
  • Providing feedback and assistance to the Manager on all aspects of team members' performances for evaluations, rewards, and issue resolution.
  • Identifying training needs of team members coordinating and providing training for junior staff.
  • Leading and suggesting positive change in the operations of the team and department.
  • Playing an active role in promoting and clarifying company policies, procedures, etc.
  • Setting an example of professional behavior for team members.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


  • Organized, highly motivated, detail oriented.
  • Ability to work independently, or as part of a team, with mínimal supervision.
  • Strong leadership skills and attributes.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Flexibility, Solves problems.
  • Strong English communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Proficient computer skills including MS Word, MS Excel.

Required Qualifications:


  • Degree in chemistry or related field.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining LC/MSMS and GC/MSMS instrumentation for a variety of methods; 6 years or more is preferred.
  • Experience working with ISO/IEC 17025 or similar International Standardization systems for laboratory operation.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience leading a team in laboratory setting.
  • Knowledge of HRMS instrumentation is an asset.

Physical Demands:


  • Ability to stand or sit for a full shift.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and carry for short distances.
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks.
